Liverpool told that Mo Salah is ‘certain’ to sign a new contract and stay at Anfield

As January begins to draw to a close, Liverpool supporters have not been granted any of their New Year’s wishes so far.

Plenty of optimistic fans had been hoping that the Reds would dip into the January market and bolster their squad ahead of a Premier League title push. That hasn’t happened.

Others, although perhaps accepting that winter additions had always seemed unlikely, would have been sure that Liverpool’s high-profile contract extensions would have been sorted out. That hasn’t happened either.

As each day passes, Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold edge closer to the Anfield exit door. And as each game is played, the trio appear to get better and better.

Alexander-Arnold was unbelievably good against Ipswich on Saturday, while Salah found the net once again, too.

Trent’s situation is a story for another time, but in terms of Salah at the very least, former Arsenal and England defender Martin Keown has now claimed that he’s certain what’s about to happen.

Mohamed Salah ‘certain’ to sign new Liverpool deal

Salah’s goal against Ipswich was expertly taken and put the Egyptian on 19 league goals for the season.

That means he has now bettered his tally from last term, with 16 Premier League games left to play.

Understandably, given his importance to Liverpool scoring goals, fans are growing tetchy about the potential of facing life after Salah a lot sooner than hoped.

But speaking on TalkSPORT, Keown claims that the 32-year-old is not going anywhere and will likely sign a three-year contract extension.

“I’m certain they’re going to find some way that they can meet his needs and he gets a new contract,” says the pundit. “Probably for three years, that’s probably what he’s fighting for.

“I see no decline in him, he just keeps on going. He still looks supremely fit, he’s still got that pace and if he stays there for another two or three years, he will break all those records.”

Keown sees no signs of Salah decline

Despite Keown’s confidence, there appears to be little sign that anything between Salah and Liverpool is imminent.

However, the former Arsenal centre-back says he is predicting a breakthrough simply because he doesn’t think the Egypt captain will want to give up the thrill of playing for the Reds at Anfield every other week.

“It’s supposed to be a joy every week, to be out there, to be at Anfield, to be enjoying that, drinking in that cup of noise and excitement that they’ve got every week,” he says.

“They want to be there next year. I don’t think he wants to give that up and he’s making a point with his goals. He’s playing angry and this is probably going to take Liverpool to the title.

“If he comes out the team, he’s involved in 50 per cent of the goals, if he’s out of the team it could be a struggle for them. But I see no sign of that, he looks supremely fit.”
