Liverpool fans are once again left watching on as other clubs make signings they can seemingly only dream of during a transfer window.
The Reds did scarcely any business in 2024 and that has so far carried over into 2025.
Despite strong links to Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush, for example, Liverpool ultimately decided to stay out of the race to sign him.
Man City instead took the lead and on Thursday announced the arrival of Marmoush as their new number seven.
Given that he is a national team colleague of Reds superstar Mohamed Salah, there had seemed logic in reports that Liverpool were leading the way for Marmoush.
But after missing out on the 25-year-old to their eternal Premier League title rivals, Liverpool fans have still had plenty to say after City dubbed Marmoush with a brand new nickname.

Man City announce arrival of Omar Marmoush
As always felt likely, Marmoush name-checked Salah in his first interview as a new Man City player.
Unfortunately for the former Frankfurt man, he is going to have to deal with comparisons to the Liverpool legend an awful lot.
However, in an interesting – and strangely respectful – nod to Salah, Man City posted an image of Marmoush in his new colours on X with the caption ‘City’s Egyptian Prince.’
Given that the world of football instantly knows who is meant by the ‘Egyptian King’ this was a fascinating choice for City to post and has inevitably got Liverpool fans talking.

“Prince because you already know there’s only 1 Egyptian King in England,” one fan wrote alongside an image of Salah celebrating at the Eithad Stadium.
“Called him prince cause you know who the king is, fair play on that,” added another, with some in agreement that City had been respectful towards Salah, commenting “Admins self awareness – 10/10.”
“At least they correctly recognise who the King is,” added another fan, complete with a compilation of Salah’s best moments at Liverpool.
“Showing love to Salah, respect the announcement,” said one commentator, with another left to rue what could have been had they linked up at Anfield.
“Man The Egyptian Prince and the Egyptian King playing together what could’ve been,” they said, as others flocked to praise City for a ‘classy’ showing towards Salah.
“Respect that lads, classy towards Salah and not inviting hate on your new signing,” said one while another wrote, “Thank you for your reasonable acknowledgement of Egyptian royal hierarchy.”
Has Mohamed Salah reacted?
With Liverpool due to play City at the end of February, we don’t have to wait long to see the King go up against the Prince.
As someone who needs no extra motivation anyway, it’s not hard to imagine that the arrival of his younger countryman will be the sauce Salah needs to go to another level against City.
In the meantime, although Marmoush has sealed his arrival in Manchester with a post on his Instagram page, Liverpool’s No.11 has not yet reacted.
There’s every chance that being Marmoush’s national team captain, Salah has responded and welcomed his teammate to the Premier League behind the scenes. But, for now, we wait with baited breath to see how the one true King responds.
