Lille manager Bruno Genesio admits he has some regrets about his gameplan against Liverpool

The 2024/25 campaign has got off to a positive start for Lille and their manager Bruno Genesio.

Les Dogues find themselves third in the Ligue 1 standings after 18 matches, while the French club are in touching distance of automatically qualifying for the Last 16 of the Champions League with a win needed against Feyenoord next week.

Lille could have put themselves in a great position to achieve that with only a point against Liverpool on Tuesday night, however, the Reds would overcome Genesio’s tricky side to secure a 2-1 win.

Goals from Mohamed Salah and Harvey Elliott on either side of the halftime break helped Liverpool secure their place in the Last 16 but that does not tell the whole story.

Salah was full of praise for Elliott after the contest, as the Englishman performed admirably against a Lille team who put up a strong fight at Anfield. But, despite this, Genesio was not happy after the match.

Bruno Genesio admits frustrations with Lille performance against Liverpool

The opening 30 minutes of the contest at Anfield proved very frustrating for Liverpool as the Reds struggled to create chances against a Lille side who were very disciplined in their 4-4-2 defensive set-up.

Many were impressed with the Ligue 1 side’s display against the Premier League leaders but one who wasn’t, proved to be their manager.

Genesio felt that his Lille team were too “timid” against Liverpool in the first half at Anfield; while their second-half display was not good from a defensive point of view.

“I feel a bit sorry about the fact while we were disciplined in the first half, we were a bit timid.” the French coach told the press via the Liverpool Echo. “We weren’t really that keen on going on the attack and should have used the ball better. We didn’t move quickly enough or use overloads out wide.

“In the second half, things were a little bit different and we tried to be more ambitious. We did equalise but didn’t make a good job defending the second goal.

“We may well have equalised again as we had some opportunities. Had we played in the first half as we did in the second half we might have done better.

“Hopefully this will help us grow and become more confident and make us aware of what we are able to do. We needed to go for it a bit more often and create more problems for Liverpool.”

Liverpool’s win over Lille highlighted once again how Arne Slot’s men can get themselves out of tricky situations and it has put them in a great position heading into next week.

Arne Slot can rest Liverpool players for their final Champions League clash

Although Raphinha’s late goal for Barcelona against Benfica denied Liverpool the chance to secure the top spot in the Champions League table, a point against PSV Eindhoven next week will be enough to earn that position.

This will be important for the Last 16 stages as it will provide the Reds with an easier passage on paper to the quarter-finals, which could earn Liverpool €12.5m in Champions League prize money should they reach this stage of the competition.

Given this scenario, this could prompt Slot to rest some of his main stars against the Dutch side as the fringe players in his squad should be good enough to achieve their goal.

Liverpool face a tough trip away to Bournemouth following their travels to the Netherlands and resting players would be very beneficial before the trip down south.

The Cherries have the ninth-best home record in the Premier League and have already beaten Tottenham, Man City and Arsenal at the Vitality Stadium.
