Liverpool fans had their eye on one or two of the Lille players during Tuesday night’s win in the Champions League.
The Reds ended Lille’s 21-game unbeaten streak with a deserved 2-1 win over the French side at Anfield.
And although it was not really a match that will live long in the memory from a Liverpool point of view, it was still notable to finally see reported target Jonathan David live in the flesh.
David has been linked with Liverpool pretty relentlessly over recent years, but Tuesday was the Canadian’s first ever match against the Reds.
Available on a free at the end of the season, David could still be an attractive option for the Liverpool owners as they look to bolster their forward line once more.
And having seen the 25-year-old get his side back into the game with a well taken second-half goal, former Reds strikers Daniel Sturridge and Robbie Fowler gave their verdict on the potential target.

Jonathan David fails to convince Robbie Fowler
David is certainly set to be one of the most attractive free agents in Europe this summer.
Liverpool considered signing David when they brought Diogo Jota to Anfield in 2020 and his name has never been far away from the gossip columns ever since.
But after watching him live on Tuesday evening, Fowler suggested he hadn’t been much impressed by the Canada international.
“You’re not gaging him on tonight’s performance,” the Liverpool legend told Amazon Prime Sport. “I don’t think any Lille or Liverpool players really stood out. You don’t sign a player on the back of one performance anyway. It was tough for him, Liverpool as much as they weren’t unbelievable, they still did a job.”
Sturridge was a little more upbeat, praising David for still managing to get on the scoresheet despite a difficult night for him.
“He was able to still score,” the pundit chimed in. “He was defending most of the game, but when you position yourself in the right place, right time, that’s something you can’t teach. So, fair play.”
Will Liverpool push to sign David?
David’s situation is a slightly bemusing one. He has been one of the most consistent goal scorers in Europe for half a decade now, but finds himself available on a free at 25.
Of course, the biggest move of his career will likely come this summer, but it still begs the question as to why none of Europe’s elite sides have come in for him in the past.
| Season | Apperances | Goals | Assists |
| 2020/21 | 48 | 13 | 4 |
| 2021/22 | 48 | 19 | 0 |
| 2022/23 | 40 | 26 | 4 |
| 2023/24 | 47 | 26 | 7 |
| 2024/25 | 32 | 18 | 7 |
From a Liverpool point of view, you can understand why David would be appealing. It is not often that a young, proven goal scorer is available on the market for nothing and the Reds do need a new central attacking option.
Nevertheless, in our opinion, if Liverpool had truly wanted to sign David, they would have done it already.
The former Gent man did not cover himself in glory at Anfield and we think that will only underline the fact that he will never truly become a genuine target for the Reds.
