Liverpool secured top spot in the UEFA Champions League league phase with a comfortable yet entertaining win against LOSC Lille.
Goals from Mohamed Salah and Harvey Elliott were enough for the Reds to secure victory at Anfield with Lille going down to ten-men early on in the second-half after Aissa Mandi received two yellow cards for two bookable offences.
With Stephen Warnock jinxing Salah leading up to the goal, it was a good night for Arne Slot’s side, who head into this weekend’s Premier League tie against Ipswich Town off the back of two good wins against Brentford and now Lille.
And Daniel Sturridge has now given his verdict on one controversial moment from the game involving Liverpool defender Kostas Tsimikas.

Sturridge laughs off Lille player’s call for a foul after Tsimikas tackle
Speaking on Amazon Prime’s coverage of the match, the former Liverpool striker couldn’t believe how many Lille players were contesting Salah’s goal after Tsimikas won the ball off Jonathan David in the build-up, with Mandi receiving his first yellow card of the night for protesting to the referee.
Sturridge said when asked if Lille players had a case with Tsimikas’ tackle on David: “He got the ball by the looks of things to me, I can’t see what they’re complaining about! They’re making a fuss out of nothing.”
With Steve McManama praising Tsimikas last week for his performance against Nottingham Forest, the Greek international is enjoying his best season yet for the Reds after impressing once again this evening against Lille.
And even though the French side thought the defender got away with a foul in the build-up to Salah’s opening goal, the left-back showed why he has grown leaps and bounds this campaign under Slot, who could be viewed as the first-choice option over Andy Robertson.
How good has Tsimikas been for Liverpool this season?
Few Liverpool fans would have predicted Tsimikas to be as good as he has been for Liverpool this season, with the £12m signing from Olympiakos finally looking the part at Anfield after years of playing second-fiddle to Robertson.
| Kostas Tsimikas 2024/25 Liverpool stats | |
| Games played | 24 |
| Goal contributions | 2 (0 goals/2 assists) |
| Tackles p90 | 1.3 |
| Interceptions p90 | 1.1 |
| Key passes p90 | 0.6 |
| Passing accuracy | 89% |
And Tsimikas’ resurgence this season is reflected in the defender’s stats, with the fullback showing he can excel as a modern-day left-back by giving Liverpool quality coverage at the back and also going forward.
Indeed, Jamie Carragher might want Liverpool to sign a new left-back, but Tsimikas is proving this season that the Reds already have a quality option already in their ranks under Slot, who could only get better if he can shake off his injury problems.
