Liverpool enjoyed one of their best weekends of the Premier League season as their 2-0 win against Brentford was followed up by Arsenal slipping up against Aston Villa.
Mikel Arteta’s side threw away a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 at home against the Villians as the north London side now sit six points off Liverpool in the Premier League standings, with the Reds having a game in hand over the Gunners.

With Thomas Frank lauding Liverpool as the best team in the world, this weekend felt seismic in the Premier League title race, with Arne Slot’s side looking like the clear favourites for the championship even at this stage in the season.
And Paul Merson has now issued a new title verdict after Liverpool’s win and Arsenal’s draw this weekend.

Merson unconditionally backs Liverpool to win the Premier League
Speaking on Sky Sports after Arsenal’s result at the Emirates Stadium, the pundit said he would be ‘shocked’ if Liverpool didn’t go all the way to win the Premier League this season after this weekend’s results.
Merson said when asked about the title race: “With Liverpool scoring two goals in injury time and Arsenal doing that, the swing is massive. I’d be shocked if Liverpool didn’t go on to win the title from here.”
With Gary Lineker also backing Liverpool to win the title, things could not be going better for the Reds at the start of 2025 despite some slip-ups in recent weeks against the likes of Manchester United and Nottingham Forest.
And with an Arsenal icon in Merson now also tipping Liverpool to go all the way in this season’s title race, the pressure will be on for Slot and his squad to get the job done, a mission only made easier by clubs around them failing to keep pace.

Who do Liverpool face next in the Premier League?
Liverpool have one of the most congested fixture lists out of any team in Europe with the Merseyside giants competing in four competitions and looking to win each and every title on offer this season under Slot.

And as a result, Liverpool’s next five Premier League games could decide once and for all if the Reds have the quality and the nerve to go all the way in the league, with some big tests coming up.
High-flying AFC Bournemouth have beaten Arsenal and Manchester City at home this season whilst the final Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park will be no easy task for Liverpool, neither will a trip to the Etihad Stadium, where Pep Guardiola’s side will want to claim a statement win.
