Electronics store Currys poke fun at Liverpool on social media after Reds rule out January signing

Liverpool supporters are growing frustrated at their club’s lack of activity in the January transfer market.

The Reds have barely done anything at all in terms of new signings for the past 12 months, with Federico Chiesa the only arrival in 2024.

That measured strategy has by and large paid off, as Liverpool find themselves top of the Premier League table under Arne Slot.

However, with one or two holes within the Liverpool squad, an addition or two would really help the Reds’ title push.

There have been signs that something could happen. Liverpool considered a move for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia before the Georgian opted to join PSG, for example.

But with January now more than halfway through, the smart money will be on sporting director Richard Hughes keeping his powder dry. And as the Reds sit on their hands once again, electronics store Currys have emerged as a surprise critic.

Currys poke fun at Liverpool with ‘laptops’ quip

Throughout his first stint at Anfield, FSG’s new CEO of Football Michael Edwards became well known as the data-cruncher to end all data-crunchers.

‘Michael Edwards’ laptop’ became shorthand for the sporting director sniffing out some hidden gems in the transfer market by way of analysing data.

Edwards may have passed the baton onto Hughes this summer, but with the 45-year-old still in overall charge, the current approach is expected to be similar.

Last week, stories emerged that Liverpool were looking to sign Stefanos Tzimas, a 19-year-old forward currently playing in the German second division. It looked like textbook Michael Edwards.

But after journalist James Pearce claimed that Liverpool are not interested in Tzimas on Wednesday, Currys took to social media site X to question whether the Reds needed any assistance.

“Your laptops working okay over there LFC?” the post reads. “We can help if needed.”

Liverpool setting themselves up for busy summer

While Liverpool were not ever especially likely to be overly busy in January, there is a feeling amongst the fanbase – and seemingly those beyond as well – that they are leaving themselves short.

There is plenty for the Reds to sort out in terms of new contracts for key players and they could end up having to replace a good few of them this summer.

It can often be a good idea to move business forward to the winter market, as Liverpool have done in the past with the likes of Luis Diaz.

Should they choose not to do that – and all the signs are that they will not – Hughes, Edwards and the rest of the recruitment team will be leaving themselves with a little too much to do next summer.

There’s still time to get those laptops find up and working hard, but we wouldn’t be expecting much.
