Liverpool trail Nottingham Forest 1-0 at the City Ground in a game that could have big implications for the Premier League title race.

The Reds went into tonight’s tie six points clear of the Garibaldi with a game in hand as Liverpool knew they had a golden chance to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League if they can come away with a win against Forest.

However, things have not gone to plan for Arne Slot’s side with Chris Wood’s early opener the difference between Liverpool and Forest at the break, with the Reds struggling to find their rhythm in the final-third despite dominating in possession.

And Slot was not pleased by Chris Kavanagh’s refereeing performance in the first half.

Slot left angry after Murillo barge on Luis Diaz

As spotted by the Athletic’s Ed Mackey, Slot was left fuming after Kavangah failed to spot Forest defender Murillo barging Luis Diaz off the ball, with play continuing as the obvious foul was not spotted by the Premier League referee.

Indeed, it has been a frustrating game so far for Liverpool, with the Merseyside giants controlling all the possession but failing to do anything past Forest’s stubborn defence, who have now gone over seven hours without conceding a Premier League goal.

And with Peter Crouch lauding Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk as possibly the best defender he has ever seen, everything that could go wrong for the Reds has seemingly gone wrong, with the Anfield side looking unlikely to find an equaliser anytime soon.

Indeed, Liverpool need to rediscover their attacking quality during the restart, and Slot will know that dropping points tonight could be huge in their bid to win the Premier League title given how many fixtures are coming up this January.

Who else do Liverpool play this month after Forest?

Liverpool are fully aware with how important tonight’s fixture is, with the Reds eager to add more distance between themselves and their Premier League title rivals, who Forest most certainly are this season.

And things don’t get any easier for Liverpool, with Brentford coming up next for the Anfield side before Slot welcomes LOSC Lille in the penultimate UEFA Champions League league phase game of the campaign.

Indeed, Liverpool need to show their title credentials against Forest tonight, and a big second-half is needed if Slot is to send a message to rest of the Premier League that the Merseyside club are the team to beat in the division.
