Liverpool are set to be one of the biggest players in the January transfer market, with the Reds interested in signing a defender.

El Hadji Malick Diouf is wanted by Liverpool with the Slavia Prague left-back one of many fullbacks the Anfield side are believed to be targeting this January, with Jamie Carragher urging the Reds to replace Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas this month.

With Liverpool still interested in Jorrel Hato, all signs point towards the Premier League leaders bringing in one or even two new additions for the backline as Arne Slot looks to bulk out his options in the second-half of the season.

Yet one rumoured Liverpool target is now attracting major interest from Premier League sides.

Liverpool face Premier League opposition for Patrick Dorgu.

According to CaughtOffside, Liverpool are far from alone in their interest in signing US Lecce defender Patrick Dorgu, with Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham also tracking the Danish youth international.

Liverpool have been monitoring Dorgu for quite some time, with Total Football Analysis noting the Serie A fullback as a ‘powerful’ runner after a breakout 18 months in the Italian top-flight with Lecce since joining from FC Nordsjaelland.

Although United are the favourites for Dorgu’s signature, Liverpool’s need for a new left-back who can grow under Slot could appeal greatly to the Danish wonderkid, especially with the Reds top of the Premier League and UEFA Champions League standings.

However, with Dorgu’s dream to play for Chelsea, time is quickly running out already for Liverpool to land the Lecce youngster, who could be the ideal answer for the Reds in their mission to sign a long-term replacement for Robertson.

Who else could Liverpool sign this January?

Defenders may be at the top of Liverpool’s priority list this January, but it’s far from the only position the Reds are considering with the market now open and funds there to be spent on improving a potential title-winning team.

Liverpool have made a move for Joao Gomes with the Wolves midfielder impressing this season despite the Molineux side’s woeful form in the Premier League, whilst Bologna rejected a bid for Sam Beukema from the Reds.

Indeed, Liverpool look ready to be proactive in the January transfer window this year, and a number of signings could be what’s needed to get Slot’s side over the finishing line in what is lining up to be a historic year for the Reds.
