Barely three days in and Liverpool supporters will likely be sick of the January transfer window already.
The winter window is generally seen as a time for the Reds to make bold statements in the transfer market to boost their squad mid-season.
But while that appears unlikely to happen in 2025, Liverpool are also dealing with the very real possibility of losing one of their top players.
In the build-up to the January window, it had always seemed improbable that Liverpool would lose Trent Alexander-Arnold during the first month of 2025.
However, with the clock yet to even strike 12 midnight on New Year’s Eve, Real Madrid made their move for Alexander-Arnold.
And while Real continue their push to sign Trent, journalist Fabrizio Romano offered a new update late on Thursday night.

Talks set to commence for Trent Alexander-Arnold
After the news broke of Real Madrid’s continued attempts to buy Alexander-Arnold, it will be fascinating to see how the Anfield crowd react on Sunday.
Liverpool play Manchester United in what is traditionally one of the very biggest games of the season.
Their first chance to see Alexander-Arnold live in action since Real started seriously pushing to get him, some Liverpool supporters may let anger get the better of them.
In the meantime, Romano took to X on Thursday night to report the latest in the saga.
“Real Madrid maintain their stance on Trent Alexander-Arnold deal: if won’t be possible to negotiate with Liverpool in January, Real Madrid will push with the player to bring him in as a free agent for July,” he says.
“Official contacts between Trent and Real Madrid are expected soon.”
Liverpool not giving up on Alexander-Arnold
Given how far along things have already gotten with Real Madrid, it is starting to feel inevitable that Alexander-Arnold will end up in Spain.
Whether that’s in January or not will likely depend on the player himself.
From a Liverpool point of view, reports have suggested that the Reds will not give up on Alexander-Arnold right up until the Scouser tells them he’s decided to leave.
For the moment, that is seemingly still yet to happen. But according to journalist James Pearce, Trent is set to make a decision very soon.
Nervous – and sad – times for Liverpool as one of their own edges closer to the exit door.
