Whether Real Madrid’s second approach for Trent Alexander-Arnold will get them closer to January deal with Liverpool

January is barely a day old and Liverpool fans will already be wishing for the window to end.

The Reds are coming under mounting pressure from Real Madrid who look like they mean business in 2025.

Real are trying to sign Trent Alexander-Arnold ahead of his Liverpool contract expiring in June.

Liverpool rejected an approach from the European champions before the clock had even struck 12 midnight on January the 1st.

But with it looking more likely than ever that Trent will leave, that does not seem to be the end of the matter this month.

And as Real plan a second run at the Liverpool academy graduate, The Times have reported how that is likely to go down at Anfield.

Trent Alexander-Arnold bid ‘doomed to failure’

It was a surprise to learn that Real Madrid had brought forward a move for Alexander-Arnold to January.

There have been reports that Trent himself is not keen on a mid-season exit and would rather wait until the summer if he is to leave.

Nevertheless, with injury problems of their own, it appears that Real are ploughing ahead anyway.

And The Times claim that the Spanish giants are willing to pay just over £20m to move Alexander-Arnold’s transfer forward.

A second approach from Madrid is reportedly not set in stone, however, with Los Blancos instead ‘weighing up’ whether an official offer is the right way to go.

From Liverpool’s point of view, it’s claimed that any bid would be ‘doomed to failure,’ with the Reds having already made their position that Alexander-Arnold is not for sale clear to Real. A second approach would reportedly not change that stance.

Liverpool should consider offer for Alexander-Arnold

From our point of view, this all depends on exactly how keen Alexander-Arnold is to leave Liverpool for Madrid.

If the No.66 has already decided that his future lies away from his boyhood club, then we would like to see the Reds consider Real’s offer.

This one isn’t really about the money on offer – although getting £20m for Trent is obviously better than losing him on a free – it’s more about how the right-back could affect the mood in the Liverpool squad moving forward.

Liverpool have a title to win this season. There is a strong argument that they are more likely to win that with Alexander-Arnold in the team, but we think that if his head is elsewhere, that is not necessarily the case anymore.

Rather than have a player who is already halfway out the door turning out, maybe it’s the right decision to cut him loose and move ahead with what we have.
