Liverpool set for showdown talks with Federico Chiesa after agent makes request to management

Liverpool have a fairly lengthy to-do list as the January transfer window opens in Europe.

The focus for the Reds will likely be on retaining their current players rather than bringing any new ones in.

But while Liverpool supporters wait to see what will happen with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Real Madrid, there is plenty of intrigue to be had elsewhere, too.

Aside from Alexander-Arnold, perhaps the player most at risk of being let go in January is Federico Chiesa.

Chiesa has only played four times for Liverpool since arriving in August. It has been a dismal few months for the Italian at Anfield.

As a result, there have been claims that Chiesa wants to leave Liverpool and return home to Italy for more game time. With that in mind, it’s set to be a big few days for the 27-year-old.

Federico Chiesa set for Liverpool talks

One of the few disappointments of Liverpool’s season so far has been the way Chiesa’s time at the club has gone.

Brought in for a cut-price transfer fee, it was perhaps expected that the Euro 2020 winner would not be a key man in the Liverpool squad.

But whatever the expectations were, Chiesa has still fallen short of them.

Nevertheless, there have been claims that Liverpool retain faith in Chiesa and see him as a long-term project. But with the No.14 playing such little football, maybe a loan move to Serie A would now make sense.

According to Italian outlet Calciomercato, that scenario is now very much under consideration by Liverpool. They claim that the Reds have ‘opened’ up to Chiesa going out on-loan in the New Year.

With Napoli already said to be speaking with Chiesa’s agent, Fali Ramadani, the intermediary has reportedly set up a meeting with the ‘Liverpool management’ which will take place in ‘the next few days.’

Ramadani is claimed to be looking for clarity on his client’s situation at Anfield.

Liverpool should keep Chiesa

In our opinion, a loan move back to Italy for Chiesa would not be the right move for Liverpool or for the player himself.

With so many games left to play, there’s every chance that the former Juventus winger can still play a big role in a successful season for the Reds.

According to Arne Slot, the fact that Chiesa has barely featured up until now has been because of a lack of match fitness. As that improves he will hopefully get much more of a chance.

Chiesa is also on a four-year contract and should he go away and come back, he will have to settle in all over again at Liverpool. Better to keep him around and let him do that while also contributing to what could be a big 2025 for the Reds.

Alisson Becker hailed Chiesa as a ‘wonderful’ player upon his arrival at Liverpool. If the Reds cut their ties now, they’ll never get a chance to see that in action.
