The January transfer window is now open and it’ll be interesting to see how Liverpool approach it.

The Reds refrained from splashing the cash in the summer transfer window as Arne Slot stuck to his guns and opted to go with the squad he inherited from Jurgen Klopp.

Federico Chiesa was the only player who walked through the door at Anfield, with the Italy international joining the club from Juventus in the dying embers of the summer.

And if reports are to be believed, he’s already being linked with a departure after his initial struggles at Liverpool.

Chiesa has featured just four times in all competitions since his summer move as he continues to struggle with injuries.

The Italian international hasn’t really spent too much time on the treatment table. Instead, Liverpool have asked him to do a bit of a mini pre-season, which would help him to adapt to the rigours of the Premier League.

Chiesa’s agent is set to have showdown talks with Liverpool to decide the next course of action for his client.

In the meantime, his former club Fiorentina are weighing up a sensational move for the Italian, who was a fan favourite during his stint with the club.

Writing for Firenze Viola, journalist Mario Tenerani quipped: “There’s a rumor that’s been going around for a while and that’s talking about a Viola trail for Chiesa. You might say it’s fantasy football…

“Instead, perhaps it’s not just a January fairy tale, like so many others, in fact. It seems that Fiorentina are really thinking about it and not just now.

“Last summer there were rumors of under-the-radar explorations, while now there’s something more. There’s one obstacle, however, that’s not easy to overcome: the salary.

“In Liverpool, where his experience is already at the end of the line, Chiesa receives a net salary of just under 7 million euros. Completely out of reach for the Viola club.”

Liverpool shouldn’t offload Chiesa

Chiesa has been described as an ‘incredible’ player by Paulo Sousa and signed a four-year deal when he joined the club in the summer.

Liverpool were well aware of his injury history when they snapped him and still opted to give him a long contract, which is a sign that they are more than happy to play the waiting game with him.

Chiesa is clearly working his way up to adapt to the Premier League, so a loan move away from the club midway through the season would just defeat the purpose of what Liverpool initially set out to do.

The Reds are still alive in all competitions and with games set to come thick and fast over the next three months, the 27-year-old will get a handful of opportunities to show the Anfield faithful what he’s capable of.
