The rumour mill has been in full swing in recent weeks as we wait to see if Liverpool will be active in the January transfer window.

Arne Slot refrained from splashing the cash in the summer, but that could change in the upcoming transfer windows as he’s now got a clearer idea of his squad.

Liverpool have been liked with a move for Alphonso Davies, who looks set to leave Bayern Munich on a free transfer if he doesn’t put pen to paper on an extension.

While he’s undoubtedly a fantastic player, Slot would be best advised to pass up on him considering the overall package of the deal.

Alphonso Davies’ demands could disrupt Liverpool wage structure

According to Capalogy, Mohamed Salah is Liverpool’s highest earner, taking home a gross pay of £18.2m per year.

The likes of Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold are second and third with gross salaries of £11.4m and £9.3m respectively.

With the trio currently in line for extensions, the Reds will at least have to match Salah and Van Dijk’s wages and give Alexander-Arnold a sizable hike, so they are already set for a huge outlay.

Davies will be available on a free transfer if he does join Liverpool, but Sport Bild report that he wants a salary of more than £10m per season, which could make him the second highest-paid player at the club.

The Reds have earned praise in footballing circles for always being within the PSR guidelines and adhering to a strict wage structure, so they’ll think twice before making an exception for Davies – or anyone else in world football.

Davies is open to joining Liverpool and has been described as an ‘unbelievable’ player by Joshua Kimmich (via Bundesliga.com), but the Reds should look elsewhere if they want a new left-back.

Kerkez a better alternative for Liverpool

With Andy Robertson’s form dipping and the defender’s contract expiring in 2026, his future could come under scrutiny at the end of the season.

Kostas Tsimikas is a good enough understudy, but his injury problems coupled with the Scotsman’s current predicament could force Liverpool to scour the transfer market for a left-back.

Milos Kerkez has been linked with a move to Anfield, with the Hungarian well-known to Richard Hughes as the Liverpool sporting director signed him during his stint with Bournemouth.

The Reds might have to pay a sizable fee for Kerkez, but the fee will be amortised over the length of his contract and his wage demands wouldn’t be in the same stratosphere as that of Davies, so he represents a more practical option for Liverpool.
