Liverpool secured a 2-1 win against Southampton in the Carabao Cup as they booked their place in the semifinal of the competition.

The Reds are the current holders of the domestic cup and faced a tricky test against the Saints away from home as Arne Slot made several changes to his usual starting XI.

Wataru Endo earned a rare start but found himself playing as a centre-half alongside Jarell Quansah, but that didn’t stop him from producing a Man of the Match performance.

And after his recent display at St Mary’s, David Lynch has shared an update on his future ahead of the January transfer window.

Endo is yet to start a game in the Premier League or the UEFA Champions League and has fallen down the pecking order at Anfield after a fantastic debut season under Jurgen Klopp.

However, he has made several substitute appearances to see off games and has been a regular feature in the Carabao Cup, starting each of Liverpool’s three games in the competition against West Ham United, Brighton & Hove Albion and Southampton.

According to Lynch, Endo will not be allowed to leave Liverpool in January as he’s still a valuable member of the squad, although his situation is set to be re-evaluated in the summer as a departure remains likely at the time.

Liverpool sources say there is ‘no chance’ they part ways with the Japan captain midway through the season, with Slot praising Endo for his performance against Southampton.

Endo’s stats this season

Endo has been hailed as an ‘unbelievable’ player by Peter Crouch but has played fewer minutes than any Liverpool outfielder barring Federico Chiesa and Harvey Elliott, who have both suffered long-term injuries this season.

However, his performance against Southampton showed that he is up for a challenge when given the opportunity, which is a huge plus for Slot as Liverpool are alive in all four competitions.

Endo wears his heart on his sleeve and could well play a bigger role in the coming weeks if he carries on in the same vein.
