Rickie Lambert shares why he’s really worried about Darwin Nunez after reaching ‘tipping point’ at Liverpool

Liverpool lead the way in the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League but are amidst a crucial stage of the season where games come thick and fast across all competitions.

After being held to successive draws in the Premier League, the Reds’ lead at the top of the table has been cut to just two points, although they have a game in hand and can extend the gap to five.

Arne Slot’s side are still in a comfortable position and will look to return to winning ways when they face Southampton in the quarterfinal of the Carabao Cup later today.

And Rickie Lambert – who represented both clubs – has delivered a word of warning to one Liverpool player who had made headlines in recent weeks.

Diogo Jota was missing for around two months and only returned to action last weekend as he came on as a second-half substitute and scored in the 2-2 draw against Fulham.

In his absence, Darwin Nunez led the line for Liverpool and it’s safe to say he didn’t set the world alight with his performances.

Slot praised the Liverpool fans for backing Nunez but admitted he hasn’t delivered the required end product in front of goal, which is slowly becoming a cause for concern.

And Lambert believes the Uruguayan has reached a tipping point at Anfield and is unsure whether he will be given more time to prove his worth.

“Players go one way or another at Liverpool,” said Lambert on Redmen TV’s YouTube channel.

“Nunez is at the tipping point now and I was hoping and praying it would all click and he’d become like Fernando Torres. What I’m worried is happening right in front of us is that it’s going the other way.

“Under the pressure of being a number nine for Liverpool, it’s very hard. If it’s not going your way, the fans are not patient but they have been, to be fair. Just doing well for Liverpool isn’t good enough – you have to be sensational.

“Otherwise, the fans will look for the next one and the pressure can be overwhelming. This is what is happening with Nunez. I hope he’s got time to turn it around but I’m not sure.”

Nunez’s record for Liverpool so far

Troy Deeney delivered a grim verdict on Nunez after his performance against Girona where he missed two glorious chances to score in the first half.

The Uruguayan has a likable personality and wears his heart on his sleeve when he plays, but his end product hasn’t been good enough so far.

With Liverpool keeping tabs on Joao Pedro, Nunez needs to start producing the goods immediately if he wants to have a long-term future at Anfield.
