Andy Robertson has had a difficult time of late at Liverpool, with the Scottish international looking like a shell of a player the defender used to be.
The former Hull City star was sent off in Liverpool’s 2-2 draw against Fulham on Saturday with the left-back this season struggling for form and fitness, though Robertson was named Man of the Match against Girona recently in the UEFA Champions League.
With Liverpool now interested in signing the likes of Alphonso Davies, a change at left-back appears to be coming in 2025, with Robertson’s time at the top now coming to an end after so many years as one of the best fullbacks in the world.
Yet Paul Scholes has issued a surprise verdict on how he thinks Robertson has performed this season.

Scholes says Robertson criticism has been overblown this season
Speaking on the Overlap, the former Manchester United midfielder admitted that he wasn’t convinced by recent talk that Robertson has fallen off this season, Scholes admits that the Liverpool defender has made some mistakes.
With Jamie Carragher suggesting that Robertson needs help in the position, Scholes’ comments on Robertson will come as a surprise to many Liverpool fans, who this season have become fully aware of how much the defender’s form has dropped off.
But Scholes is seemingly not convinced that the Scottish international’s performances have been that bad, with the pundit saying: “I don’t actually think he’s been that bad. I know he’s made a couple of mistakes, but I don’t think he’s actually been that bad.
“He’s the type of player, and I know this because we were talking about it earlier in the season because he was in and out of the XI, but he’s the type of player who needs to be playing every week.”

Who could replace Robertson at Liverpool in 2025?
Robertson has been one of Liverpool’s best players since joining back in 2017, with the defender forming one of the essential pillars behind Jurgen Klopp’s success with the Scottish star also creating one of the best fullback pairings in Premier League history with Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Yet there’s no denying that the 30-year-old needs replacing, and options have been plentiful if rumours are to be believed, with Fulham defender Antonee Robinson seemingly the favourite for Liverpool heading into next year.
Indeed, replacing Robertson will be an unusual task for Liverpool given how present the defender has been in the playing squad these last seven years, yet the time is now to find a successor for the left-back, who this season has dropped off massively.
