Liverpool have seen their lead at the top of the Premier League reduced to two points after consecutive draws.
The Reds had steamed ahead during the early part of the season, putting themselves well clear of the chasing pack.
However, draws against Newcastle and then Fulham, coupled with the postponement of the Merseyside Derby have seen Liverpool’s rivals eat up some ground.
Chelsea are now the Reds’ closest challengers, and Enzo Maresca’s side have the chance to move ahead of Liverpool by beating Everton on Sunday.
With games in hand Arne Slot should not be panicking. Nevertheless, injuries are currently a problem in the Liverpool squad as they prepare to stretch themselves for the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening.
And ahead of that meeting with Southampton, former Reds centre-back Jamie Carragher has admitted that he’s desperate to sit down and drill something home to Slot.

Jamie Carragher seeking Arne Slot explanation
Having won the trophy twice over the past three seasons, Liverpool supporters have seen plenty of recent glory in the Carabao Cup.
That feeling never gets old, of course, and given the choice supporters would obviously like to make that a third win in four seasons this time around.
Nevertheless, Slot’s squad is feeling stretched at the moment. As a result, many would not be all that devastated if Liverpool should lose against Southampton.
This is a point Carragher was keen to highlight while speaking to a Liverpool supporter on The Overlap on Wednesday.
“The title feels so important for Liverpool this season and you almost want to really explain that to the manager, that’s what I feel,” says the Liverpool legend.
“I feel that I want to just get hold of him and say ‘forget that FA Cup lark and the Carabao Cup, honestly, I can assure you, every Liverpool fan is not bothered about them this season’.
“‘You’re in a position where you’ve got a decent lead, it looks like City aren’t going to be involved, you fancy you can take on Arsenal and Chelsea.’ That’s the feeling within the fanbase isn’t it, forget the cups.”
Should Liverpool ‘forget the cups’?
This is a comment that will always split the fanbase of any club. Do you sacrifice winning one trophy to get your hands on a different, much more important one?
For many supporters, the answer to that will be ‘yes’, however that only works if you end up then winning the one you really want.
| Position | Team | Played MP | Won W | Drawn D | Lost L | For GF | Against GA | Diff GD | Points Pts |
| 1 | 15 | 11 | 3 | 1 | 31 | 13 | 18 | 36 | |
| 2 | 16 | 10 | 4 | 2 | 37 | 19 | 18 | 34 | |
| 3 | 16 | 8 | 6 | 2 | 29 | 15 | 14 | 30 | |
| 4 | 16 | 8 | 4 | 4 | 21 | 19 | 2 | 28 |
Should you tank a cup competition and end the season empty-handed, then that will look like a poor strategy.
With Man City so dominant in the Premier League in recent times, Liverpool have consoled themselves by winning everything else along the way.
Look at, say, Arsenal, who have had a similar story without actually winning anything and they’d tell you it’s better to come third and win a trophy than second and win nothing. Then again, it’s better still to win it all.
