Harvey Elliott shares what he thinks about Liverpool’s youngsters as they prepare to be thrown in v Southampton

Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott is in line to make his first start of the season in the Carabao Cup against Southampton.

Elliott could play attacking midfield against Southampton in the quarter-final clash between the Saints and Liverpool.

Southampton welcome Arne Slot and his players to St Mary’s on Wednesday, with the two clubs having met there in the Premier League last month.

Liverpool won that meeting 3-2, with their focus now turning to Carabao Cup action, where Slot is certain to rotate.

Federico Chiesa could play for Liverpool at St Mary’s, having finally returned from injury, like Anfield teammate Elliott.

The latter has featured for just 33 minutes in all competitions this season, but is now back to full fitness after a foot injury.

Having made his Liverpool debut in the League Cup, Elliott was asked by the Liverpool website if he takes on a senior role with the club’s academy players, a handful of which could feature against the Saints.

“Absolutely, it’s a role that I enjoy taking up because I have been in their shoes before, I know how they feel,” he said.

“I know [that] on the outside they might look like they’re fine but inside it might be different, especially the younger lads.

“It’s like when I first joined, I was a bit scared to ask questions because I didn’t want to seem like I was irritating anyone.

“So, I feel like for me it’s an opportunity now where I want to be known to them that I am here if they need me or any of the other players.”

What Harvey Elliott has spotted about Liverpool youngsters

Elliott made his senior Liverpool debut against MK Dons in September 2019 having joined that summer, with a Premier League debut arriving against Sheffield United in January 2020.

Since then he has become a regular on the first-team scene, although he has been limited to just four appearances this time around due to injury.

But the midfielder has featured in every matchday squad since last month’s international break, with substitute appearances against Girona and former club Fulham.

Further discussing the current youngsters at the Merseyside club, Elliott noted: “There’s a few younger players as well, like Jarell [Quansah] and Curt [Jones], who are taking up the same role.

“But at the same time, we are a team. They train with us, they play with us, they are involved because they’re good enough – it’s just as simple as that and we want them to do really well at this football club and we want them to fulfil their dreams as well.

“If we can help them along the way then we’re going to be there for them and at the same time we’re going to need them so hopefully they can get their opportunities. They deserve to.”
