I saw two reasons why £35m Fulham player has to be signed by Liverpool in January after Anfield display

Liverpool were fortunate to escape from Anfield with a point on Saturday after drawing 2-2 with Fulham.

The Reds had their game plan ripped up in the opening 17 minutes, with a red card for Andy Robertson compounding a surprise opener for Andrea Pereira.

From then on, Liverpool were up against it. And although the Reds deserve huge credit for the way they came back into the game, it is still a rare two points dropped at Anfield.

Robertson will not be able to avoid criticism for what was a needless sending off and it will only make the questions over his future in the Liverpool squad grow ever louder.

The 30-year-old’s case will also not have been helped by the showing of Fulham left-back Antonee Robinson on the opposite flank.

Robinson has been linked with Liverpool and on this evidence, the Reds should be pulling out all the stops to try and sign him.

Liverpool have to make Antonee Robinson push

Robinson has been good against Liverpool in the past. However, the 27-year-old took things to another level on Saturday.

In the past, Robinson has often got the better of Mohamed Salah on the Liverpool right. That wasn’t always the case on Saturday, with the battle more of an even contest.

But while it felt as though Salah had his full-back’s number at times, Robinson kept on plugging away and perhaps ended up winning more battles than he lost.

Furthermore, the American was an absolute menace going the other way. Ending the game with two assists, he was a threat all day long and Trent Alexander-Arnold couldn’t live with him.

Compare and contrast that to Robertson’s display, and Liverpool were shown quite clearly that they have to sign a left-back in January.

Robertson is a Liverpool legend but he is costing the team in big moments. Unfortunately, Saturday’s performance and red card feels a little like the moment which signalled that Arne Slot cannot not afford to sign a left-back at the next opportunity.

And Robinson has shown once more that he should be that man.

How get-able is Robinson?

Given how well Robinson is performing at the moment, Liverpool are unlikely to be his only suitor.

The USA international is also a former Everton youth team graduate and although he is not from the city itself, it is unclear what his thoughts on joining the Toffees’ eternal rivals are.

Nevertheless, if Liverpool come with a good enough offer, then surely Robinson would be tempted to leave Craven Cottage in the winter.

There have been suggestions that Fulham would demand around £35m. Although that does sound steep, Robertson has also been laid bare that not addressing this issue could have far-reaching complications for Liverpool.

One performance should not change transfer plans and that’s not what we are advocating for here. But this has been coming for some time. It looks like a long way back for Robertson, while Robinson is the man in the ascendency.
