Liverpool are facing a weekend without Premier League football after Saturday’s Merseyside Derby was postponed.

Authorities chose to shut the match down due to safety concerns amid the ongoing Storm Darragh.

It comes as a blow to Liverpool’s chances of maintaining their lead at the top of the Premier League, and will allow the chasing pack to have the chance to close the gap, should their matches go ahead.

Nevertheless, there could still be some positive consequences of Saturday’s game being called off.

The Liverpool squad is in a slightly precarious place in defence especially and they’ll now have an extra day’s rest before heading to play Girona on Tuesday.

One man who was already set to miss out on the Merseyside Derby was Alexis Mac Allister. But with the Argentine’s one-game suspension scheduled to take effect on Saturday, it has now been revealed if and when it will be moved to.

Alexis Mac Allister set to miss Fulham clash

Liverpool were looking a little stretched across the board for Saturday’s game with Everton.

As a result, fans have decided the postponement is a good thing for Liverpool. It can allow extra rest in a extraordinarily busy time of the campaign.

Reports had suggested that Arne Slot had decided to pick Dominik Szoboszlai to play against Mac Allister at Everton.

But with Ryan Gravenberch looking leggy against Newcastle on Wednesday, the ability to shield him for a few extra days can only be good news, too.

Unfortunately, there is a need for both players to be ready and available for Tuesday’s Champions League game, with Mac Allister ironically suspended in that competition, too.

And according to The Athletic, his one match ban will carry over to the Reds’ next Premier League fixture, which comes against Fulham next Saturday. He will not be available for that game.

When will the game be played instead?

Sticking with The Athletic, they also shed some light on when the game could be rearranged to.

Unfortunately, there is no clear picture of this yet, though, with the publication simply relaying a message from the Premier League that details will be announced ‘in due course.’

Given the packed nature of the Liverpool fixture list, it will be a balancing act to fit an extra fixture in somewhere down the line.

So, even though Reds fans may be seeing the positives right now, the knock-on effect of cancelling this game could still echo for the rest of the season.

The match will almost certainly be a mid-week, evening fixture which will put the Goodison Park atmosphere in a whole different light.
