Mohamed Salah is making headlines on and off the pitch for Liverpool this season.

The Egyptian is arguably playing the best football of his career, which is some achievement considering his consistent displays at Anfield since joining the club from Roma in 2017.

His recent displays also bode well for him in terms of a new contract as he remains locked in talks with Liverpool over an extension.

Salah recently said he was disappointed with Liverpool as they haven’t yet offered him a new deal, with his current contract set to expire at the end of the season.

And now, Paul Merson has made a fresh claim about his future that could be music to the ears of the Anfield faithful.

Earlier this week, David Ornstein reported that Van Dijk rejected Liverpool’s opening contract offer, although the two parties remain in talks and hope for a resolution.

The same report also stated that Liverpool are yet to offer Salah an extension, which emerged as a cause of concern.

Merson, however, believes the Reds are about to put their offer on the table, adding that a three-year contract could be on the cards.

“We’re only hearing it on the grapevine, but we’re hearing two years with a year option to Mo Salah,” said Merson on Sky Sports.

“That’s a long time. I’d give him 300-400 grand a week now. Of course, I would today because he’s doing the business. I’m his biggest fan. I think he’s world-class.

“I’ll say he gets in every team in the world. He’s a winger and he’s the top scorer in the Premier League. It’s just absolutely amazing the numbers he puts up week in, week out, year in, year out.

“But in two-and-a-half years’ time, that’s a lot of money to be giving someone if they’re not doing the business then.”

Salah’s stats this season show he’s worth every penny

Despite turning 32, the Egyptian is only getting better and has shown no signs of slowing down as he continues to rack up the numbers.

When Liverpool were in a similar position in 2022, there were talks of Salah’s powers potentially waning once he entered his 30s as they gave him a deal to make him the highest-paid player in the club’s history.

However, that hasn’t been the case and judging by how well he’s performed this season, he is likely to carry on in the same vein for the foreseeable future.

Liverpool simply can’t afford to lose a player like Salah and should put the money on the table in the coming weeks to avoid the saga dragging on well into the new year.
