Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold name former Liverpool teammate who had a better left foot than Mo Salah

Liverpool have been indebted to the brilliance of Mohamed Salah’s left boot countless times over the past seven years.

The Egyptian has become well known as one of the best left-footed players in world football.

Salah’s left-footedness is one of the factors which makes the prospect of replacing him at Liverpool so difficult to fathom.

There aren’t many players out there who can attack the right side and cut in like the Liverpool legend can.

Despite that, though, teammates Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold have decided that Salah’s is not the greatest left-foot they’ve ever seen within the Liverpool squad.

Instead, both players came to the conclusion that former Red Xherdan Shaqiri is the man who takes that crown.

Xherdan Shaqiri hailed for ‘unique’ left foot

Though Shaqiri had a slightly underwhelming career with Liverpool, he still turned up in some big moments.

The little Swiss can count a Merseyside Derby goal amongst his repertoire, as well as a memorable Anfield double against Man United and a key part in the iconic Barcelona comeback.

Nevertheless, when Robertson and Alexander-Arnold were asked to build their perfect player during an interview with TNT Sports, it was a bit of a surprise to hear them overlook Salah for Shaqiri.

“I [previously] said Shaqiri, from the players I’ve played with,” said Robertson. “I’m never even in the question am I?!”

“I’d take Studge [Daniel Sturridge] you know…” Alexander-Arnold suggested. “Shaq’s left foot was joke,” countered Robbo.

“Technically, Shaq, yeah, his left foot was incredible,” Trent agreed.

“Don’t get me wrong, we’re not playing down Mo, Mo’s left foot is unbelievable,” Robertson concluded. “But Shaq just had a way of hitting the ball, the power, it was unique I would say.”

Shaqiri’s still got it

Although he may have departed the club in 2021, Shaqiri has admitted to still watching Liverpool since his exit.

And having spent a few years in the MLS wilderness with Chicago Fire, the 33-year-old made a surprise return to hometown club FC Basel over the summer.

Xherdan Shaqiri’s Liverpool career

It has so far proven to be an excellent move for Shaqiri. The former Bayern Munich man has hit seven goals in 14 appearances this season, including a stunning hat-trick at the end of November.

Robertson and Shaqiri met with their national teams at the Euros last summer and it was warming to see the pair exchange a greeting before the game.

Shaq of course went on to hit a stunner in that match, confirming his status as one of this generation’s most clutch tournament footballers. His left foot was and remains incredible. It’s just a shame Liverpool didn’t see it a little more during his stay.
