Liverpool dropped points in the Premier League title race as they played out an entertaining 3-3 draw against Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

The home side took the lead twice through Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon, but a goal from Curtis Jones and a brace from Mohamed Salah gave the Reds a 3-2 lead.

However, Fabian Schar restored parity late in the game to give the Magpies a hard-fought point as Liverpool were dealt with a sucker punch with just a few minutes left on the clock.

In what was an eventful game at St James’ Park, one Liverpool player caught Robbie Fowler’s eye as he lavished praise on his second-half display.

Salah was kept at bay by Lewis Hall in the first half but he showed his class after the interval.

He first set up Jones with a brilliant out-of-the-foot pass as the Englishman marked his 150th Liverpool appearance with a goal.

Salah then stamped his authority on the game with two fantastic goals to give Liverpool the lead, although they squandered it at the death thanks to Schar’s equaliser.

Fowler felt Salah really turned it around in the second half as he urged his former club to tie him down to a new contract soon.

“I thought he was brilliant,” said Fowler after the game on Amazon Prime.

“Second half he was unbelievable, first half, he was a bit of a bit-part player. He was brilliant, you talk about the contract, get that contract signed pretty quick.”

Pat Nevin also praised Salah for his exploits against Newcastle, although the Egyptian won’t be too happy as his side dropped two valuable points in the Premier League title race.

Nevertheless, as his underlying numbers suggest, he was absolutely unbelievable again and is undoubtedly up there with the best footballers in the world.

Liverpool face a race against time to tie him down to a new deal, but with the Egyptian clearly signaling his desire to remain at the club, it should make their job a lot easier.
