Liverpool could find themselves with plenty of work to do during the summer transfer window of 2025.
Although there is still at least a good six months until the Reds can make any signings, that will come around quickly.
In the meantime, there remains a good chance that Liverpool could need to replace three of their key players.
Should any of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk or Trent Alexander-Arnold not extend their contracts at Anfield, then they will need a direct successor to be signed.
Perhaps the most troubling remit is to find someone who can capably fill the boots of Salah.
And as Salah’s future comes under the microscope following his public comments at the weekend, pundits Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker have moved to dismiss one rumour of who Liverpool could sign to replace him.

Liverpool fans urged to ‘ignore’ Bryan Mbeumo rumours
There is simply no way that Liverpool would be able to effectively replace Salah in terms of a like for like swap.
The Egyptian is by common consensus the best player in the world right now. They don’t grow on trees.
Nevertheless, Liverpool would have to do something. And given his form in the Premier League this season, Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo has emerged as potential candidate.
Put to Lineker, Shearer and Micah Richards on the Rest Is Football podcast that Liverpool are reportedly looking at Mbeumo as a Salah replacement, the two former England strikers dismissed the idea at this early stage.

“You’ll see loads of reports in between. If he doesn’t sign a deal, Salah, then there’ll be loads of reports and they’ll be linked with loads of players in between now and then,” Shearer insisted.
“There’s going to be a lot of rumours,” Lineker agreed. “I always take them with a bit of a pinch of salt until you see something a bit closer. It’s like during the transfer window, every club is supposed to be after this player and that player and it’s just best ignored.”
“Agents will be working and pushing their players here there and everywhere,” interjected Shearer. “It’s what happens, putting it out into the media.”
Bryan Mbeumo should be on Liverpool’s radar
While Mbeumo is not exactly putting up the kind of numbers Salah is, there are signs that he could be about to go to the next level at Brentford.
Still only 25-years-old, Mbeumo has hit eight goals in the opening 12 matches of the Premier League season.
With six non-penalty goals, he is only one behind Salah in that respect.
| Appearances | Goals | Assists | Total G+A | |
| 2021/22 | 35 | 4 | 7 | 11 |
| 2022/23 | 38 | 9 | 8 | 17 |
| 2023/24 | 25 | 9 | 6 | 15 |
| 2024/25 | 12 | 8 | 1 | 9 |
The likelihood is still that the Liverpool forward will pull well clear of the Frenchman between now and the end of the season. But it’s good company for Mbeumo to be in at this stage.
As a quick, left-footed, forward who is Premier League proven, the former Troyes player does tick plenty of boxes for Liverpool.
Lineker and Shearer may not be convinced just yet, but if something more concrete comes up regarding Mbeumo, it should be cause for excitement for Reds supporters.
