Liverpool star Andy Robertson was the hero for Scotland as the captain netted the winner in their 2-1 victory over Poland.

Robertson was recently replaced by Kostas Tsimikas in the left-back role at Liverpool, although the Scot has since won his way back into the starting XI.

He had been somewhat struggling for the Reds, but that certainly hasn’t been the case for Robertson with Scotland.

The left-back headed home brilliantly in the Nations League clash at Poland on Monday, with his winner coming in the 93rd minute.

Worryingly, however, Robertson has an injury issue following the match, and it remains to be seen how fit he will be for his return to Liverpool.

But for now, the Scotland captain will be celebrating the superb goal, with his fellow Premier League star John McGinn having also found the back of the net.

Robertson’s goal came on his 80th cap for his nation, with the left-back expressing his delight at the achievement on Instagram with images of his first and most recent cap.

“First cap → 80th cap,” he wrote. “Same stadium, same feeling! Proud to join the legend Darren Fletcher as third most capped. The win was the cherry on top of the cake, see you all in March.”

And his milestone has caught the eye of Liverpool icons Jordan Henderson and Virgil van Dijk, who shared heart emojis under the post, with the former adding a wine glass emoji to represent Robertson’s ability progression with age.

It has been a superb rise from Robertson, who joined the Reds for just £10million from Hull City in July 2017.

He has been one of the club’s best-ever signings, helping the Merseyside outfit to several trophies since his arrival.

Robertson has also been a standout for Scotland over the years, with the nation currently going very strong under Steve Clarke.

The left-back will now return to Merseyside ahead of a busy period for Liverpool, who get back to action against Southampton on Sunday.

But it remains to be seen if he will pass a fitness test for that Premier League test, and indeed if Arne Slot chooses to play Robertson ahead of Tsimikas.

That battle will be warmly welcomed by the Dutchman, who needs his players constantly fighting each other for starting spots this season.
