Liverpool sit atop the Champions League table after thrashing German champions Bayer Leverkusen 4-0 at Anfield.

Xabi Alonso did his utmost to quieten Anfield, with the Bayer Leverkusen boss succeeding in his efforts in the first half.

But Liverpool turned on the charm under Arne Slot on the hour mark, with the stadium bursting into life upon Luis Diaz’s opener.

Curtis Jones and Diaz impressed Stephen Warnock for the opening goal, with the midfielder slotting through an expert pass for the winger, who finished with an exquisite chip.

The floodgates then opened at Anfield, with Cody Gakpo heading home a Mohamed Salah cross just two minutes later.

After further pressure from Liverpool, Diaz added twice late on to complete his hat-trick and a superb Champions League win for the Reds.

And it was the opening goal from the Colombian that Gakpo believes was the turning point on the night, with the Netherlands ace telling Amazon Prime: “They played a very good game, a very tough opponent.

“But we kept going, we kept trying, creating chances and defending well. The goal came and I think that won us the game, the first goal.”

After beating Brighton 2-1 on Saturday, Liverpool moved back to the top of the Premier League table under Slot.

The Reds are two points clear of Manchester City, while they are also now two points clear of Sporting and Monaco in the Champions League table.

It has been a phenomenal effort from Slot thus far, with the Dutchman enjoying many monumental moments in his brief time in the dugout.

League wins over Manchester United and Chelsea perhaps stand out for fans, with the win over Bayer Leverkusen now added to that list.

Gakpo did, however, refuse to call the latest victory the club’s best win so far this season, with the attacker saying: “Four-nil, good result against a very good team. I don’t know if it’s the best one, but it’s a good one.”
