Alexis Mac Allister hails Anfield ‘magic’ after Liverpool thrash Bayer Leverkusen

Liverpool enjoyed another excellent win on Tuesday, putting Bayer Leverkusen to the sword in the Champions League.

The German champions came to Anfield in good form in the competition having won two and drawn one from their opening three games.

But Liverpool are on a different path this season. Three wins out of three was soon turned to four in four and the Reds are looking down from the top of the pile.

It had not always looked like that was going to be the case, though. Leverkusen dominated the ball in the first-half and would have been ahead but for an unfortunate handball by Jeremie Frimpong.

Having ridden that storm, the Reds once again called upon the power of Anfield to give them a lift. Just as it did on Saturday against Brighton, the stadium and the fans responded.

And after seeing a Champions League night at Liverpool’s home for just the second time, Alexis Mac Allister was suitably impressed.

Alexis Mac Allister hails Anfield ‘magic’

Mac Allister had some experience of Anfield on European nights last season, of course, but things were different in the Europa League.

Having only played for Brighton in Europe before joining the Reds, the World Cup winner had never tasted the Champions League at all until this season.

Unsurprisingly, though, Mac Allister has looked completely at home playing at the top level of European football.

Having been in slightly patchy form however, the 25-year-old continued to look a touch rusty throughout the first-half.

But like just about all of his teammates, Mac Allister improved in the second period.

And taking to Instagram after the game, the No.10 hailed what had been an ‘unforgettable’ and ‘magic’ night at Anfield while also congratulating hat-trick hero and good friend Luis Diaz.

“Anfield and its magic gave us another unforgettable night,” writes Mac Allister. “Luis Diaz, fully deserved brother!”

Xabi Alonso thanks Anfield for support

This was not a vintage Mac Allister performance, but it was still nice to see the Argentine on show in front of a man who will certainly appreciate his talents in Xabi Alonso.

Alonso was a slightly different midfielder to Mac Allister, but as a deeper lying playmaker the Spaniard did share some of the qualities which make his fellow World Cup winner so special.

Obviously, Alonso will not have been enjoying watching too much of what he saw at Anfield last night.

But speaking to Amazon Prime Sport after the game, the 42-year-old also paid tribute to the famous old stadium and how the Liverpool fans welcomed him back.

“For sure I would have loved another result but that part [the reception from the fans] was okay,” he said. “I’m really happy and thankful for that reception.”
