Ibrahima Konate is one of Liverpool’s most important players, with the defender forming a solid centre-back partnership with Virgil van Dijk.

The £34m signing from RB Leipzig has established himself as one of the best defenders in the Premier League, with Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli recently naming Konate as the toughest opponent he’s faced alongside Kyle Walker.

With Konate winning praise from Arne Slot against Arsenal, the Liverpool centre-back is now part of the Anfield furniture having won the trust of his new manager and become something of a cult hero with supporters.

And Fabrizio Romano has now issued an update on Konate’s future at Liverpool.

Liverpool close to finally reaching new contract agreement with Konate

Taking to Twitter, the Italian journalist posted that it is a ‘matter of time’ before Liverpool reach an agreement with Konate on a new contract, with a breakthrough expected soon.

Romano posted: “Ibou Konate returns to team training as he’s expected to be ready to face Bayer Leverkusen. Liverpool also keep working on new deal for Ibou, considered matter of time.”

With Liverpool facing contract dilemmas with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, getting Konate tied down to a new deal will be nothing short of huge for the Reds and the future of the club.

And with a breakthrough expected soon, there’s a good chance that Liverpool could announce Konate’s new contract by the end of this month, with the defender seemingly happy on Merseyside and playing under Slot.

Konate contract could inspire others to renew with Liverpool

Liverpool have been uncharacteristically lax on tying their key players to new contracts, with the Reds going into 2025 with three key payers heading towards free-agency and many others having just one year or two remaining on their deals.

Yet Konate signing a new contract could be the spark that’s needed for the Reds to get into action and to commit their biggest and best players to long-term deals, with Slot showing that there is an exciting future afoot for Liverpool.

With Konate one of the best defenders in the Premier League, the France international staying will be huge for Liverpool and could well inspire other players to commit their future to the Anfield side heading into 2025.
