Arne Slot reveals what he really thinks about Darwin Nunez’s form and where Liverpool striker can improve

Darwin Nunez has started two of Liverpool’s last three games in all competitions and is slowly growing in stature under Arne Slot.

Diogo Jota started the season as the focal point in attack, but with the Portuguese international sidelined until after the international break, Nunez has taken his spot in the team.

After delivering an assist for Mohamed Salah vs Arsenal, the Uruguayan scored the solitary goal of the game against Leipzig, although he was benched for the Carabao Cup tie in midweek.

Nunez is expected to lead the line for Liverpool vs Brighton later today and Slot has shared his thoughts on how the enigmatic striker has fared so far.

Nunez has blown hot and cold since joining the club from Benfica in the summer of 2022, but his raw talent is unquestionable and has earned praise for his work rate off the ball.

Slot was impressed by Nunez’s ability to run opposition teams ragged during pre-season, a quality that is invaluable for a manager who wants his teams to press high up the pitch.

And now, the Dutchman has singled out Nunez’s work rate for special praise, although he feels he can still get better at pressing from the front.

“With his work-rate definitely, he has done well. He also came back quite late (to pre-season) and had to adapt a bit because we press a bit differently’ said Slot via Liverpool Echo.

“The idea is still the same, to press high, but we’re using the press a bit more with the wingers inside and the number nine has to defend a little more and he is now more involved in that pressing part.

“So that’s what he does quite well. I still see a lot of room for improvement. But the first thing, and the most important thing, is that his attitude is right and he wants to work.

“Now maybe he doesn’t have to run that much if he does it even better but that is normal if you have only played a few games that it is not perfect yet. But the attitude he has is very positive like the others.”

Nunez’s stats under Slot

With two goals and assists apiece across all competitions, the Uruguayan hasn’t really set the world alight with his end product but has worked his socks off for the team.
