Micah Richards answers whether he thinks Liverpool’s Mo Salah is a better forward than Harry Kane

Liverpool did not have any players represented at the annual Ballon d’Or ceremony on Monday.

The Reds have had plenty of involvement in the award over recent times, with Virgil van Dijk most memorably finishing second in 2019.

One player who was honoured at the event in Paris was Bayern Munich forward Harry Kane.

Kane has been a superstar of world football since his earliest days in the Premier League for Tottenham, for whom he won the division’s Golden Boot award three times.

The England captain is one of only four players to have ever top-scored in the Premier League three or more times.

One of the others is Mohamed Salah. Between the Liverpool legend and Kane, they won every Golden Boot bar one from 2016 to 2022. But who is the better player?

Micah Richards picks between Mo Salah and Harry Kane

Before Salah came into the Premier League, Kane had looked set to dominate the goal scoring charts.

The 31-year-old bagged the most in the division in 2015/16 and 2016/17. But then Salah came along and broke all sorts of records for Liverpool.

Someone who knows all about Liverpool’s Egyptian King is Micah Richards, who played alongside Mo while at Fiorentina.

And asked on The Rest Is Football whether the Reds would be a ‘stronger side’ without Salah in the way that Spurs are without Kane – which is arguable – Richards went to bat for his old teammate.

“No”, answered the former Man City defender. “No, no, no, no, no. Not a chance. Liverpool need Salah. And the reason why I say that is Salah can score even when he’s not playing well. That is the difference.

“So many times he’s unlocked the door just by being in the right position. A piece of skill, whether it be a set-piece, even his goal against Arsenal, the movement. I just don’t think anyone can replace him right now.”

“Are you saying Salah’s a better forward than Harry Kane?” Alan Shearer chimed in.

“No, I’m just saying what he’s done at Liverpool in terms of three Champions League finals, winning the Champions League, winning the league, what he’s done at Liverpool has been more important to his career in terms of trophies,” answered Richards.

Is Mo Salah better than Harry Kane?

Although Richards ends up sitting on the fence a little bit, this is a really interesting debate.

Salah and Kane are the two best goal scorers of a whole era in the Premier League and it’s a worthy question to put them head-to-head.

Harry Kane vs Mo Salah in the Premier League

Obviously, Salah has had the better of it in terms of trophies and is possibly the more well-rounded forward, too.

But in terms of sheer goal getting, the Reds No.11 can’t really match what Kane is currently doing at Bayern Munich.

This will perhaps be a debate that rumbles on well beyond both player’s respective careers. In our opinion, it has to be Salah but we’re more than a little biased!
