Liverpool made it three wins from three in the UEFA Champions League against RB Leipzig away in Germany.

Darwin Nunez scored the only goal of the game as the Uruguay international found the back of the net for only the second time this season after being found by Mohamed Salah at the back-post from close-range.

Although Pat Nevin was critical of Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher’s performance in Saxony, the Reds enjoyed another professional win in the Champions League with the result putting Arne Slot’s side in the driving seat for a top-eight finish.

Yet Rio Ferdinand was left fuming by one moment he witnessed in the first-half for Liverpool.

Ferdinand stunned Liverpool didn’t get a penalty vs RB Leipzig

Speaking on TNT Sport’s coverage of the game, the pundit was shocked by VAR’s decision to not award Liverpool a penalty after Nunez was clearly fouled in the penalty area just minutes after putting the Reds ahead.

With Joe Cole saying Liverpool were lucky to not have conceded a penalty against Crystal Palace due to VAR overlooking a foul from Virgil van Dijk, tonight’s error from the officials is not the first time the Anfield side have seen a foul go in the opposite direction.

And Ferdinand was left in complete surprise that Liverpool wasn’t awarded a penalty after Nunez was brought down after putting the Merseyside giants 1-0 up, with the officials rightly criticised for the error.

Ferdinand said: “This is definitely a penalty. I don’t know how VAR have looked at this and said: ‘No, right, play on.’ I do not know. When you see this in slo-mo, there’s contact. VAR would have seen that and said: ‘No,’ I can’t believe it.”

Liverpool will be relieved penalty decision wasn’t key in the end

With Leipzig having two goals ruled out for offside, Liverpool were not as comfortable as many would suggest against the Bundesliga side tonight in easy Germany.

Marco Rose’s side showed why their one of the best in Europe and a side who can give any team in Europe a run for their money if they’re on form, with Liverpool eventually getting the job done against Leipzig.

And the Reds will be relieved that the penalty decision did not turn out to be key in the end, with Liverpool only needing the one goal to get all three points in Germany and to solidify their push for a top-eight finish.
