Liverpool have made a real effort in recent years in trying to hoover up the best talents in the United Kingdom to add to their academy.

From Scotland international Ben Doak who is thriving out on loan at Middlesbrough this season to signing Rio Ngumoha after his departure from Chelsea, a movement of sorts is happening at Anfield when it comes to building for the future.

With Arne Slot a manager who enjoys bringing through players from the academy based on his time at Feyenoord, Liverpool’s next generation are in good hands if the Dutch coach sticks to his youth philosophy in the years to come.

And Liverpool could soon add another top English talent to their ranks in 2025.

Liverpool in the race to sign Chelsea teenager Josh Acheampong

According to the Independent, Liverpool are one of many clubs interested in Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong, who could leave the Blues at the end of this season as a free-agent having failed to break into the Blues’ senior squad.

Regarded by Chelsea as an ‘elite’ talent as per the Athletic, Real Madrid are also interested in signing Acheampong, with Los Blancos in the market for a new right-back with Trent Alexander-Arnold a target for the Spanish giants.

As per the report, Alexander-Arnold heading to Madrid could put Liverpool in the driving seat to sign Acheampong, but at 18-years-old, the England youth international is one for the future for now.

Indeed, with Conor Bradley also on their books, Liverpool signing Acheampong would be an interesting move if Alexander-Arnold was to remain on Merseyside, and interest from other clubs could be more appealing for the Chelsea defender if he was to leave Stamford Bridge.

Acheampong could choose another club over Liverpool

With just two senior appearances for Chelsea, Acheampong is a long way off from becoming a regular for a top Premier League side like Liverpool, with the defender in need of a club where he can gain consistent minutes.

And should Acheampong choose to leave Chelsea next summer, the defender could be wise to pick another club over Liverpool, who could keep hold of Alexander-Arnold and have their right-back problems solved for the next few years.

Heading into 2025, Acheampong needs to put his career and his development first, and the defender could be wise to join a club lower down the Premier League if it means being a regular in the top-flight.
