- EXCLUSIVE with Graeme Bailey
Liverpool are on the hunt for a new left-back, with Benfica defender Alvaro Carreras a name that has cropped up in recent days.
The Reds are reportedly interested in signing the former Manchester United academy star with Liverpool keeping tabs on Carreras, who has a release clause with Benfica believed to be worth €50m (£42m).
With FC Barcelona and Real Madrid also believed to be interested in signing the 21-year-old Spanish youth international, competition is already high for Liverpool in their reported quest to sign Carreras in 2025.
Yet Rousing The Kop now understands that Liverpool’s rumoured interest in Carreras might not be what it seems like on the surface.

Liverpool currently not considering Alvaro Carreras move
RTK can exclusively report from sources ‘very high up’ at Liverpool that the Reds are not considering a move for Carreras, with the Benfica defender not being discussed internally by the Merseyside giants with the youngster also not on the radar for the Anfield side.
Although Liverpool are considering moves for left-backs heading into 2025, Carreras is not one of the options being looked at by Arne Slot’s transfer team, though a long-term replacement for Andy Robertson is on the agenda.
Indeed, the Scottish international has been one of Liverpool’s most consistent performers since moving to the Premier League giants in 2017, with Robertson still one of the best left-backs in the Premier League.
Yet one player who Liverpool won’t be looking at to replace Robertson is Carreras, who RTK can report is not being considered by the Reds at this current moment in time.

Liverpool should be looking at more experienced defenders than Carreras
Carreras is no doubt a talent for the future, with the Benfica star emerging as a potential defensive superstar in the making based on the youngster’s impressive form this season.
Yet for Liverpool, a more experienced fullback could be the right way to go in 2025 when it comes to signing a long-term replacement for Robertson, something Carreras most certainly isn’t.
Liverpool need to find the perfect player to succeed Robertson in the years to come, and right now, Carreras does not fit the bill for what the Reds are looking for.
