Liverpool’s future looks very bright at the moment with the Reds boasting a number of top young talents at the club.

Over the past half-decade or so, Liverpool have placed great emphasis on sniffing out youngsters to sign to bolster their own academy.

Players such as Harvey Elliott, Kaide Gordon and Ben Doak have been brought to the club, with plenty more examples besides.

It’s clear that while they put huge effort into nurturing the existing talent on their own books, Liverpool are always aware of the situations of other promising young players from around the country.

That has been in action as recently as this summer. There are high hopes for Rio Ngumoha, who was brought in from Chelsea.

Trey Nyoni looks like a future Liverpool midfielder, too, and it seems as though the Reds could now have set their sights on a potential midfield partner for Nyoni somewhere down the line.

Liverpool watching Sunderland’s Chris Rigg

With the exception of Elliott and – to a lesser extent – Gordon, most of the teenaged players Liverpool have signed were yet to truly break into their respective club’s first-teams.

Elliott had already played three times for Fulham when he joined the Reds at just 16-years-old.

But while they were highly-rated, the likes of Nyoni, Ngumoha, Amara Nallo and Alvin Ayman were yet to make an impact in senior football.

One youngster who that absolutely does not apply to is Sunderland midfielder Chris Rigg. There have been claims that Rigg has been on Liverpool’s radar since 2022.

But having broken into the first-team last season, the 17-year-old is now a key player for Sunderland. According to journalist David Lynch, though, Liverpool’s interest has not gone anywhere.

“Chris Rigg 100 per cent will be someone Liverpool are tracking,” Lynch told Anfield Agenda. “I’ve heard that name from sources relatively recently over the past couple of years really.

“He was so highly rated before he made his breakthrough at Sunderland. Everybody who watched any youth football was aware that this kid was going to be absolutely massive.”

David Lynch explains likelihood of Liverpool move

Rigg would be different from other young players signed in that he would likely head into the first-team Liverpool squad straight away.

The midfielder has been showing regular glimpses of what he can do this season after becoming the youngest scorer in EFL Cup history last year.

According to Lynch, however, it remains to be seen whether Rigg feels he is ready for a move next summer, when he’ll turn 18. Instead, although Liverpool will keep watching, it seems plausible that nothing will happen until 2026.

“I think maybe a move to Liverpool next summer would possibly be too soon,” says the reporter. “But I think it’s one of those where they are very obsessed at the moment at getting in British talent, domestic youngsters.

“So, I’ve no doubt whatsoever they are keeping an eye on him but it will all be about what’s the best move for his career and would another year in the Championship be better, because he is still so young.

“That’s one where I would say Liverpool are tracking him but whether that actually comes to anything is massively up in the air at the minute.”
