Alisson reveals the ‘young’ player who is being added to the Liverpool leadership group

Liverpool are lucky enough to be able to call on some modern footballing greats within their playing squad.

The Reds have achieved so much over recent years and it’s no surprise when you take a look at some of the names turning out for them.

The Liverpool squad has seen plenty of change over the last couple of seasons, but a core of top, top players has underpinned that throughout.

Captain Virgil van Dijk is arguably one of the best defenders of all-time, while Alisson Becker may end his career with a not dissimilar claim as a goalkeeper.

Meanwhile, vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold has been at the club for 20 years and Mohamed Salah is a Liverpool legend and one of the finest wingers in Premier League history.

Along with legendary left-back Andy Robertson, the quintet make up Liverpool’s ‘leadership group’ – a band of players who handle any issues within the dressing room. And according to Alisson, they’ve now been adding a new name to the gang.

Alexis Mac Allister stepping up at Liverpool

When all is said and done, these five players are really the key ones left to have played through most of Jurgen Klopp’s storied time at Anfield.

Joe Gomez is obviously still around, too, but the 27-year-old is a quiet character who was also in and out of the team a lot under Klopp.

Put simply, these are enormous players in Liverpool’s history. Or at least in the modern era, anyway.

However, as things stand, three of the five are set to leave when the season ends. That will hopefully change between now and May but clearly Liverpool need to at least think about who follows them.

Both captain and vice-captain would need replacing and according to Alisson, the Reds may be lining up a ‘young’ player who can step in.

“I am committed to this club 100%,” the goalkeeper told BBC Sport. “And I think that involves how to being part of this leadership group.

“Me, Virgil, Robbo, Trent, Mo, Macca [Alexis Mac Allister] now is someone that is bringing his experience as well.

“He is young, but he has achieved so many things already,” Alisson adds. “And that brings him to a standard of good leadership.”

Alexis Mac Allister could be a future Liverpool captain

It underlines the ridiculous situation that Liverpool have gotten themselves into with contracts that the captain and vice-captain could walk out of the door for nothing next summer.

Of course, that would not necessarily be new waters for Liverpool. Jordan Henderson and James Milner left together in 2023, leaving a gap which was filled by Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold.

Should the same thing happen again, though, it would be less obvious who would replace the pair.

Given his authority, Alisson would seem like a natural choice for the armband, with Robertson perhaps operating as a decent vice.

But, in our opinion, Alisson has just proven that Mac Allister could be one to watch. The Argentine is a top professional and looks completely settled in his skin at Liverpool. Should he stay in the long-term, we think we could be looking at a future captain of the club.
