Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson almost gets into fight with Ajax teammate on the pitch

Jordan Henderson has had a funny old time of things since leaving Liverpool in 2023.

The former Reds captain made a shock exit just over a year ago, bringing over a decade of stellar service to an abrupt end.

Having chosen to make the move to Saudi Arabia, Henderson faced a barrage of criticism and soon decided that he had to return to Europe at the nearest opportunity.

That led to an interesting looking transfer to Ajax last January. Now into his first full campaign with the Dutch giants, Henderson has inevitably assumed the captain’s armband.

Just like he did at Liverpool for so many years, the 34-year-old is once again the leader out on the pitch for his club.

As we saw across nine years of Henderson’s captaincy at Anfield, this is something the midfielder takes incredibly seriously. During Thursday’s night’s Europa League clash with Besiktas, Ajax forward Bertrand Traore looks to have found that out the hard way.

Jordan Henderson not happy with Ajax teammate

Owing to the way he left the club – and where he chose to move to – it still feels like Henderson has a little bit of unfinished business with Liverpool.

Henderson is a Liverpool legend, of that there is no doubt. But he exited rather through the back door.

The man who lifted six of the seven major trophies won under Jurgen Klopp has seemingly not been back at Anfield since he left more than one year ago. That doesn’t quite sit right.

Nevertheless, Henderson is cracking on with his career in the Nertherlands in the meantime.

Ajax are not in great shape just now and after a disappointing fifth placed finish in the Eredivisie last season, they find themselves ninth after four games this term.

Notorious for setting the standard, Henderson will not be happy with that. But there was reason to smile on Thursday as Ajax demolished Besiktas 4-0 in the Europa League.

As captured by the cameras at TNT Sports, though, it was not all fun and games. With just over an hour gone and Ajax 3-0 up, Henderson was seen angrily shouting at Traore, having to be pulled away by youngster Kian Fitz-Jim.

“Well, Jordan Henderson having to be pulled away by his own players, from his own player in Traore there,” says the commentator, as replays show some angry words from Henderson.

How is Jordan Henderson getting on for Ajax?

Despite now being a real veteran, Henderson is still a key player in the Ajax midfield.

New manager Francesco Farioli was brought in over the summer and the 35-year-old coach appears to be a fan of the former Reds No.14.

Farioli has started Henderson in two of the four Eredivisie games so far this season, coming on as a substitute in the other.

With no goals and one assist to his name, Hendo has not been setting the world alight, but that was never really his game anyway.

Some may not like to see this on-pitch war of words with Traore here, but standards have obviously slipped below comprehension at Ajax and Henderson is clearly trying to raise that bar again.
