Despite Liverpool’s good start to the season, there remains a feeling of unfinished business in the transfer market.
The Reds had a strangely quiet summer window, failing to address a couple of areas which could have done with some attention.
The most pressing of these had seemed like being in the midfield. Liverpool chose not to go after an alternative having been rejected by Martin Zubimendi, preferring to stick with what they had instead.
So far, that has proven to be an inspired choice. Ryan Gravenberch has flourished alongside Alexis Mac Allister, suggesting that there is enough quality within the Liverpool squad to cope.
However, look beyond the likes of Gravenberch, Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai and the Reds’ midfield still looks like it could do with another option added to it.
With that in mind, Liverpool have been linked with going back in for Zubimendi. But according to the latest reports, the Reds are now setting their sights on someone else entirely.

Liverpool scouting Hugo Larsson
Zubimendi had looked like a perfect addition for Liverpool. The Spaniard had been identified as the ideal midfielder for what Arne Slot wants.
But although they had different ideas during the window just gone, Zubimendi is not the only player who could plug the gap in Liverpool’s midfield.
There have been claims recently that Joshua Kimmich is still on Liverpool’s radar ahead of a potential move in January, but that does not seem especially likely to happen.
Much more intriguing are links to another Bundesliga midfielder: Hugo Larsson.
Larsson has become a key player for Eintracht Frankfurt aged just 20, and according to Caught Offside, his good performances in Germany have led to attention from Liverpool.

They claim that the Reds have been sending scouts to watch Larsson this season as they ponder a future move.
It may reportedly be tricky to get the Sweden international out of Eintracht, though. The Europa League side are said to be determined to keep Larsson and could demand as much as £67m to sell him.
Eintracht are claimed to believe that Larsson has the potential to ‘reach the very top of the game’ and are ‘reluctant’ to see him leave.
Nevertheless, there is reportedly mounting interest in the youngster, with Arsenal, Man City, Bayern and Dortmund all named as other interested sides.
Hugo Larsson could be the answer for Liverpool
It seems unlikely at this point that Liverpool will return for Zubimendi. The Real Sociedad man had his chance and let it slip through his fingers.
Despite that, it does still feel as though Slot would like a replacement for Wataru Endo in the Liverpool squad.
Although his price-tag is eye-watering, there are signs that Larsson could be the player worth them going all-in for.
According to bundesliga.com, the former Malmo midfielder has ‘shades of Rodri’ about his game. Tall, athletic, quick and supremely technical, Larsson sounds like he could be a perfect fit at Liverpool.
Sticking with bundesliga.com, the Swede has been described as having ‘enormous potential’ by Eintracht sporting director Markus Krosche and looks like he could be a real star of the future. One to keep an eye on, certainly.
