Danny Murphy has spotted Darwin Nunez doing something ‘quite unusual’ on Liverpool’s bench

Darwin Nunez is something of an enigma when it comes to Liverpool’s current crop of players under Arne Slot.

The Uruguay international has shown that he has the talent to become a real superstar in the Premier League, with Gabriel Agbonlahor recently praising Nunez after the striker’s goal on Saturday against AFC Bournemouth.

Yet for every fine finish from Nunez, there’s a handful of chances where the attacker should have found the back of the net, with the former Benfica man gaining a reputation as one of the most chaotic and entertaining players in all of the Premier League.

And Danny Murphy has now noted something ‘unusual’ Nunez does whenever he’s on the bench for Liverpool.

Murphy surprised by Nunez’s energy levels when he isn’t playing

Speaking on TalkSport, the pundit highlighted how Nunez never lets his energy levels drop regardless if he’s on the pitch or not, a trait that was seemingly created by Jurgen Klopp during the two years the forward played under the former Liverpool coach.

Indeed, although channeling this energy into his actions on the pitch might be a good thing for Nunez, there’s no doubt that this attitude off the pitch has helped the forward become something of a fan favourite at Anfield, and Murphy seems to enjoy it, as well.

Murphy said when asked about Nunez’s enthusiasm even when he’s not playing: “The one thing about him – he is a manager’s dream because when he doesn’t play, he is enthusiastic when a goal goes in when he is on the bench, which, let me tell you, is quite unusual.

“This is actually a good thing generally with Liverpool for a while when Jurgen Klopp created that, but his physical output and his passion when he’s on the pitch to run around and try to have an impact whether they are playing badly or not, whether the confidence is low, whether he’s scoring, whether he has been picked, whether he is being criticised, he never falters. It’s incredible. It’s an incredible strength to have.”

Nunez shouldn’t look to change his off-the-field persona

Whilst some experts might think that Nunez would be better off being more focused whilst on the bench, the striker has crafted a persona for himself that few players have that has since made the Uruguayan unique at Liverpool.

Indeed, Nunez knows his performances on the pitch need to improve, and the striker is showing that after a top display on Saturday against the Cherries, where another start against West Ham is on the cards later tonight.

And for Liverpool fans, they will want Nunez to remain the same off the pitch given how entertaining he is, something few top-level players now are despite how far the game has gone in terms of quality.
