Virgil van Dijk says there’s an issue at Liverpool which needs to stop after 1-0 Nottingham Forest defeat

Liverpool suffered one of their most surprising defeats in some time this weekend after losing 1-0 to Nottingham Forest at Anfield.

The Reds were beaten by Nuno Espirito Santo’s side as Callum Hudson-Odoi’s sole goal in the second-half was enough to see off Liverpool, who looked off the pace despite a perfect start to the Premier League season.

With Arne Slot fuming with Liverpool’s display, the Dutch coach was well within his right to be mad with how the Anfield side performed on the day, with Forest claiming their first league win in the red half of Merseyside since 1969.

And captain Virgil van Dijk has shared what worried him most about the result.

Van Dijk urges Liverpool to never perform that badly again

Speaking to Liverpool’s official website, the Dutch international made the claim that the Reds had a reality check of sorts against Forest, with Van Dijk saying Liverpool’s standards dropped too much when compared to other games this season.

Van Dijk said: “Overall it was a disappointing afternoon, something we didn’t want to happen but we have to turn this around and make this a sort of reality check to be better for the rest of the season because if you want to achieve things this season the contrast between the games we played is too big.”

With Liverpool so far off their usual best against Forest, it makes sense why Van Dijk is now issuing such a strong warning for the Reds ahead of some huge games both in the Premier League and in the UEFA Champions League.

Indeed, this week alone sees Liverpool travel to the San Siro to face AC Milan, and if Slot’s side are as sloppy as they were against Forest, it could be another game to to forget for the Merseyside giants in Italy.

Liverpool cannot have another Forest performance this season

Liverpool were nothing short of poor against Forest in their 1-0 defeat on Saturday, and Slot knows that if he is to win silverware in his first year in England, another performance like what we saw on the weekend simply cannot happen.

The Reds have all the quality in the world to make a real go of all the competitions they’re taking part in this season, with the Premier League and the Champions League the two big ones up for grabs.

Yet if Liverpool repeat what they did against Forest at all this season, there could be some serious consequences depending on which competition the Reds find themselves in at the time of such a display.
