Liverpool made £168m bid in 2022 to sign ‘one of the best players in the world’

Liverpool are no strangers to shaking up the transfer world, with the Reds one of the biggest spenders and sellers in the market.

Whilst this summer was a quiet one for the Reds with just the two signings and outgoings of Sepp van den Berg and Fabio Carvalho, Liverpool have shown in the past that they’re willing to spend big for the right players.

Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker were once the most expensive defender and goalkeeper respectively in world football after joining Liverpool, with both players since becoming key pillars for the Reds in their success over the past few years.

And Liverpool were seemingly ready to make even more transfer history back in 2022.

Liverpool made club-record bid for Kylian Mbappe in 2022

According to L’Equipe, Liverpool made an astonishing €200m (£168m) bid to sign Kylian Mbappe from PSG, with the striker even verbally agreeing to join the Reds before the forward eventually penned a new deal with the French giants.

Noted by TNT Sports as ‘one of the best players in world football’, Mbappe had been strongly linked with a move to Liverpool before agreeing to join Real Madrid this summer, a transfer that was almost three years in the making.

Although PSG deny Liverpool ever made such an offer as per the report, it’s clear that there was some serious interest from the Reds in signing Mbappe, who flirted with a move to Anfield during his time in Paris.

Yet as we now know, a move to Liverpool is unlikely to happen anytime soon with Mbappe now a Madrid player, with the attacker likely to spend some years with Los Blancos before moving on from the Spanish giants.

Liverpool could have signed Mbappe if they tried harder

Liverpool always looked like the Premier League side that were most likely to sign Mbappe had the French superstar decided to move to England after PSG.

And given how intense Liverpool’s interest in Mbappe seemingly was, the Reds could have landed the attacker had they tried that little bit harder to bring the FIFA World Cup champion to Anfield.

It’s clear that Mbappe has a soft spot for Liverpool and would have made the move had an offer been made, yet Madrid were simply too strong for too long for the Merseyside giants to land the attacking phenom.
