Irish national media disappointed with what Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher did vs Greece

Caoimhin Kelleher secured his first minutes of the 2024/25 season with the Republic of Ireland having started against England and now Greece.

The £25m-rated shot-stopper has had an interesting international break, with Kelleher praised by the Irish media for his performance against the Three Lions despite conceding twice in a 2-0 defeat for the Bhoys in Green.

With Kelleher also revealing that he hopes to leave Liverpool in January, this international break has been a big one for the 25-year-old in his bid to finally depart Merseyside and become a starting goalkeeper elsewhere.

Yet Kelleher didn’t do himself any favours with last night’s performance against Greece.

Kelleher ‘questionable’ in Ireland’s 2-0 loss to Greece

Back between the sticks for Ireland to face Greece in Dublin, Kelleher again conceded twice as Ireland were on the losing side of another 2-0 result, with Heimir Hallgrimsson’s side already looking like the favourites to be relegated from their UEFA Nations League group.

And the Irish media were far from flattery with Kelleher’s performance, with Balls.ie noting how the Liverpool goalkeeper’s positioning was ‘questionable’ for Greece’s opening goal.

The Irish Independent had a similar line on Kelleher, with the publication saying that the Cork-born shot-stopper ‘will be disappointed’ with how the first Greece goal was scored at the Aviva Stadium.

It wasn’t all criticism for Kelleher, though, as the Irish News highlighted how the Liverpool man had put himself in the shop window ahead of the January market, where the keeper will want to move on from Anfield.

Kelleher can win January transfer with Ireland performances

Barring an injury to Alisson Becker, there’s a real chance that Kelleher will only play one or two games for Liverpool between now and the January transfer window via the League Cup.

Yet with Kelleher one of the few Irish players somewhat impressing on the international stage, the 25-year-old could win a January move based off his performances with his country in the next breaks.

Kelleher is clearly itching to leave Liverpool and to become a regular away from Anfield, and showcasing his talents for Ireland could be the best way for the keeper to finally win a move from Merseyside in 2025.
