Liverpool are interested in signing title-winning defender and could get him for free next summer

Liverpool only managed to kick the can down the road in terms of their transfer business this summer.

The Reds chose to have a muted window, signing only Federico Chiesa for this season and Giorgi Mamardashvili to arrive next.

In the meantime, Liverpool failed to address their need for a new, elite defensive midfielder and also chose not to add to their centre-back options.

Both areas of the Liverpool squad will need sorting sooner rather than later and if the Reds lose Virgil van Dijk, then the matter will become one of urgency.

Despite the thought of losing the captain being a terrible one for Liverpool, though, they are reportedly already looking at players who could replace him.

Liverpool interested in Jonathan Tah move

Van Dijk is still comfortably Liverpool’s best and most important central defender. The Reds defence is Virgil and one other.

And while Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez and Jarell Quansah are very good players, Arne Slot would clearly need to bring a top player in should Van Dijk go.

It has previously been claimed that Liverpool have identified at least two players to succeed Van Dijk.

Antonio Silva has been maned as one potentially on the radar, with Gleison Bremer also supposedly in the mix, too.

And according to journalist Christian Falk, there is a third name worth watching for Liverpool as well. Writing in his Fact Files, column, Falk claims that the Reds also like Jonathan Tah as a possible Van Dijk replacement.

“In the far-flung future, they will need a successor for Virgil van Dijk,” says the reporter. “Jonathan Tah could be that for Liverpool. They are also on the table at this time.

“I think the big advantage for Liverpool in the race for Tah is that the Premier League was always his big, big dream,” Falk adds.

“There will always be rumours linking him with a move to Newcastle. However, if Liverpool were to knock on his door, there’s perhaps a big chance that he’ll be playing in the Premier League next season.”

Liverpool could get Jonathan Tah for free

Tah has been linked with Liverpool pretty much ever since he emerged as a top quality centre-back at Bayer Leverkusen.

Having won the title with Leverkusen last season, it had looked like Tah would join Bayern Munich this summer. However, the move never ended up happening.

Although the Germany international stayed put, journalist Florian Plettenberg shared quotes from Tah on Friday, in which the 28-year-old indicates that he will leave Leverkusen once his contract ends next summer.

“My decision is just as clear as it was before. I will not extend my contract,” Tah says.

While we don’t see how at 28 Tah can be seen as anything like a long-term replacement for Van Dijk, he may still be a decent signing for Liverpool on a free transfer.
