Darwin Nunez predicts which Liverpool player will get the most assists this season

Liverpool have so far provided plenty of entertainment during their opening three games of the season.

There was a little bit of mystery over how the Reds would come out and play after the hiring of Arne Slot over the summer.

However, Liverpool look just as attack-minded as they ever did under Jurgen Klopp. With seven goals scored in the opening trio of matches, only Manchester City have hit more.

One man who will hope to play a bigger part in that as the seasons progresses is Darwin Nunez. The Reds’ No.9 has been reduced to two cameo appearances under the new head coach so far.

Nunez is usually good value when he does play, though. In 2023/24, the 25-year-old was second behind Mohamed Salah for goals in the Premier League, but also placed second for assists, too. Now, Nunez has predicted which of his teammates will top those charts this time.

Darwin Nunez backs Mohamed Salah

In each of his two season at Liverpool so far, Nunez has improved on his goal contribution numbers.

In terms of just the Premier League, the Uruguayan got nine goals and three assists in his debut season, 2022/23. Having hit 11 and eight last term, he improved markedly.

Despite his slow start, there have been claims that Slot has marked Nunez down as a key player for Liverpool this year.

Banned from representing Uruguay during the ongoing international break, Nunez has the chance to impress Slot during training next week.

When he does come into the side, though, it certainly will not be for Salah. The Egyptian has started the season like a house on fire for Liverpool once again.

So, asked by premierleague.com to name who he thinks will be the Reds’ top assister this season, it was not a surprise to see Nunez go for his mate in the Liverpool forward line.

“The player with the most assists will be… Mo Salah,” said Darwin.

Who leads the way for Liverpool so far?

It may be only three games in, but the scorer and assister charts are already starting to take shape for Liverpool in the Premier League.

So far, three players have scored for the Reds, with Salah and Luis Diaz grabbing three apiece and Diogo Jota getting one.

And in terms of assists, only four Liverpool players have set up a teammate for a goal.

Unsurprisingly, it is Salah who is top of these charts yet again. Having registered 10 assists in the league last season, Mo has three already.

Diaz and Jota also have one each, while Dominik Szoboszlai also has a single assist to his name. There’s a long way to go, but Nunez’s prediction is looking good for now.
