Liverpool attacker Darwin Nunez has formed a strong bond with Luis Suarez in the Uruguay national team over the years.
Nunez and Suarez were both heavily involved under Marcelo Bielsa as Uruguay finished third in this summer’s Copa America.
Suarez is a Liverpool legend, having scored 82 times from his 133 appearances for the Reds, with Nunez now aiming to follow in his footsteps.
Nunez doesn’t look happy at Liverpool, with just 32 minutes going his way so far this season, which certainly wasn’t the case for his compatriot, who was an Anfield regular.
But the current Liverpool forward now looks set to take over the mantle from the former Liverpool man, given that Suarez has just announced his international retirement.

Tagging Suarez on Instagram, Nunez wrote: “You are huge. Thank you from the heart for everything you did for me in the national team, you were my idol without knowing you and you are even more so now that I know you.
“As you said, you came as a child and leave as a legend, it’s everyone’s dream and you fulfilled it.”

Can Darwin Nunez come alive under Arne Slot?
Nunez has seemingly been eased into replacing Suarez for the South American nation, which is not an easy task.
But he has been flying high for Uruguay in recent times, with the forward unable to showcase his talent under Arne Slot so far.

The Liverpool manager left the attacker on the bench in the opening day win over Ipswich, before handing him 18 minutes and 14 minutes against Brentford and Man United respectively.
Jamie Carragher says Slot has a problem with Nunez, who often fails to impress at club level when finally given the chance.
It is, however, a very long season, and the Uruguayan is certain to be handed plenty of opportunities to show his new manager exactly what he is capable of, having already netted 33 goals in his Reds career.
