Former Liverpool coach confirms he’s set to join US national team after leaving with Jurgen Klopp

The sweeping changes at Liverpool this summer have not been confined to Arne Slot replacing Jurgen Klopp.

Slot coming in for Klopp is obviously still the headline news at Anfield, as the Dutchman aims to follow his storied predecessor.

However, along with replacing one of the most successful and popular managers in Liverpool history, the Reds had to put in place a whole new coaching team, too.

Along with Klopp, Peter Krawietz, Pep Lijnders, John Achterberg, Andreas Kornmayer, Vitor Matos and Jack Robinson all left the AXA Training Centre. That’s a lot of knowledge to replace.

One by one, those coaches who played such a big role in a glorious period at Anfield have moved onto new pastures. This week, another one has now confirmed his next venture.

Jack Robinson joins US national team

It has been fascinating to see the paths chosen by the coaches who defined Klopp’s period with Liverpool.

Many of them were at the club for the same, similar or even longer period than the big German himself. They had become part of the furniture.

Obviously, the most notable is former assistant manager Lijnders. The Dutchman has had a good start to life as a head coach with RB Salzburg and now has Stefan Bajcetic to call on, too.

Lijnders was joined in Salzburg by assistant coach Matos and head of conditioning Kornmayer.

Head of goalkeeping Achterberg joined Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard with Al Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia, replaced by Fabian Otte on Merseyside.

And, ironically, Achterberg’s former number two, Robinson, has now confirmed that he has taken up Otte’s old job as Head of Goalkeeping with the US national team.

“I am delighted to be joining US Soccer as Head of Goalkeeping in what is an exciting time for the men’s and women’s game both on and off the pitch,” Robinson says on LinkedIn.

“My aim is to challenge, inspire and engage with the goalkeeping community to help the national teams, coaches and players in the short and long term.”

Robinson set to work with Mauricio Pochetinno

There was of course a very slim chance that Robinson could have been taking up his new role with Klopp as his boss once more.

Klopp was offered the US national team job earlier this summer, but declined the chance for a quick return to the dugout.

Instead, the USMNT have gone for a similarly eye-catching appointment, hiring former Tottenham and Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Along with Robinson, Pochettino joins having worked in an elite environment for a huge amount of time.

From a Liverpool point of view, this of course means very little. But it’s interesting to keep track of what our former coaches are up to nonetheless.
