Liverpool supporters were given the perfect tonic to a disappointing transfer window as their team thrashed Man United 3-0 on Sunday.
The Reds had failed to do any incoming business in the final day of the market, which eventually closed on Friday.
That was the culmination of what many saw as a failed summer of business at Anfield. Despite some glaring holes in the Liverpool squad, the Reds brought in just one new player for the upcoming season.
There is the promise of Giorgi Mamardashvili arriving from Valencia next year, but having Federico Chiesa as the sole addition for the here and now made Liverpool seem a little undercooked heading into the campaign.
Had FSG gotten their way, though, Chiesa would not have been the only player joining this summer. Liverpool pushed hard to sign Martin Zubimendi and according to reports from Italy, the midfielder was not the only player they missed out on.

Liverpool made Victor Osimhen push
The latest reports suggest that Liverpool could come back in for Zubimendi in January as they aim to plug a perceived gap in defensive midfield.
Having been quiet during the summer, there remains the potential that the winter could be busy instead.
Along with another midfielder, there have been suggestions that Liverpool wanted two forwards this summer, not just the one they ended up with.
And if attacking players were in their line of focus, then the availability of Napoli striker Victor Osimhen could not have escaped Liverpool’s attention.

Having pushed to leave Naples, Osimhen is remarkably set to join Galatasaray on-loan. The Nigerian failed to come to an agreement with either Chelsea or Saudi side Al Hilal on transfer deadline day.
And according to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport, Liverpool were also one of the sides taking a long look at Osimhen.
They claim that the Reds ‘tried a blitz’ to bring the 25-year-old to Anfield before Friday’s deadline.
However, with Chelsea said to have backed away upon hearing Osimhen’s salary demands, it’s reported that Liverpool’s big move ultimately went the same way.
Will Liverpool return for Victor Osimhen?
Liverpool’s reported interest in Osimhen is not a new thing. The Reds have supposedly been close to signing the Nigerian before.
It was even claimed that Napoli locked Osimhen in a hotel room back in 2020 to persuade him into joining them over Liverpool.
Despite that long-standing interest, though, we just don’t see the Reds coming back in for Osimhen any time soon.
The transfer fee ultimately wasn’t too bad this summer, with Al Hilal said to have agreed a £67m price with Napoli. But with even Chelsea balking at Osimhen’s wages, Liverpool are unlikely to go near him.
That is a shame in some ways. Didier Drogba called Osimhen a ‘complete striker‘ and it’s clear what he brings to any team. Liverpool were never realistically going to sign him, though.
