Liverpool took on Manchester United this afternoon in what is rightly considered the biggest fixture in English football.

Arne Slot faced his former Eredivisie rival in Erik Ten Hag as the two Dutch managers oversaw an entertaining contest at Old Trafford, one that Liverpool currently lead at the time of writing at half-time.

Luis Diaz’s header at the back post gave the Reds the lead with the winger adding a second shortly before the break, yet it could have been different had VAR not intervened with Trent Alexander-Arnold’s earlier goal, which was ruled out for a potential offside in the build-up.

And the Premier League have now given an official reason behind the decision.

Mohamed Salah in an offside position for Alexander-Arnold’s assist

As per Premier League Match Centre on Twitter, Mohamed Salah’s pass to Alexander-Arnold was from an offside position, with the Egyptian winger seen in the picture to be ahead of the ball as it was played in by Diaz.

Premier League Match Centre tweeted: “Alexander-Arnold’s goal was initially awarded on-field. The VAR determined that Salah played the ball while in an offside position in the build-up and recommended that the goal was disallowed.”

With Liverpool 2-0 going into the break, Alexander-Arnold’s offside goal did little to put United back in the game or through the Reds off their performance, with the Anfield side maintaining good pressure on Ten Hag’s boys.

And the official reasoning from the Premier League is one that Liverpool fans will find difficult to argue with, with Salah clearly in an offside position before assisting Alexander-Arnold.

Liverpool are showing they mean business this season

Liverpool were once regular victors at Old Trafford during the peak years of Jurgen Klopp, and today is showing why the Reds could be back on their way to Premier League dominance under Slot.

The Merseyside giants have made it look easy against United, with Liverpool finding it easy to break up the Old Trafford side’s attack and to cut out passing lanes whenever the hosts feel like coming forward.

And a win today will show the rest of the league that Liverpool mean business this season, with no transition year needed to go once again for top honours in the Premier League.
