There is still time left for Liverpool to make a much needed new signing on transfer deadline day.

The Reds have endured a frustrating summer, bringing in only two players and just one for the here and now.

Both Giorgi Mamardashvili and Federico Chiesa look like good additions, but neither player really addresses the big issues within the Liverpool squad.

Although they have had a good start to the season under Arne Slot, the Reds are running the risk of going into the rest of the campaign a little undercooked.

With time quickly running out ahead of the window’s closure on Friday, there are reportedly two positions Liverpool are still looking to strengthen.

Liverpool looking to strengthen two areas

It is an interesting question as to whether the Liverpool squad is stronger now than it was at the end of last season.

In total, the Reds have now lost six players to either permanent transfers or contracts ending.

Of those six, only Joel Matip and Bobby Clark played more than one game for Liverpool last term. With Chiesa the only one coming in right now, you can see the argument that the Reds may be stronger.

However, Matip’s departure is one that should really have been counter-acted. The 33-year-old may have missed most of the campaign, but he was crucial when he was fit.

And according to The Independent, Liverpool would still like to bring in a centre-half if possible. Unsurprisingly, the other position mentioned as being looked at is in central midfield.

Nevertheless, it is claimed that while the Reds are keen to add a player in both areas, they are now ‘almost certain to wait’.

Somewhat disappointingly, it is also reported that Liverpool are ‘comfortable with how their squad looks’ at this point.

Interestingly, one player who is named as being a potential target is Crystal Palace forward Eberechi Eze. However, Palace are said to have been ‘resolute’ in their desire to keep Eze and it’s claimed that they look like being successful in that mission.

Liverpool kick the can down the road

It now looks very likely that Liverpool will not do any further business this summer. And that is unlikely to please anyone.

Having failed to address the two areas that really needed attention in the off-season, it really is hard to understand exactly what Liverpool’s transfer strategy is moving forward.

The need for players in these two positions is not going to go away or lessen. In fact, as things stand, next summer is due to be even worse.

Liverpool will also be forced with facing the reality of having to replace Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah.

Once again, the Reds inexplicably look likely to leave themselves far too much to do all in one go. Hopefully the lack of urgency this summer will not come back to bite them.
