‘Exceptional’ Liverpool player falls out of favour with Arne Slot and could make deadline day move away

Liverpool still have a few bits of business which could do with being completed on transfer deadline day.

Having been quiet for the majority of the summer, the Reds have packed all of their business into the final week of the window.

Having signed Giorgi Mamardashvili and then Federico Chiesa on Tuesday and Thursday respectively, Liverpool fans are hoping that a new centre-back or central midfielder is on the way on Friday.

However, although it has been claimed that Liverpool were in talks to sign Alan Varela a couple of weeks ago, nothing at all seems imminent in terms of incoming.

Instead, it feels more likely that the Liverpool squad will have been depleted rather than added to by the time Saturday rolls around.

Joe Gomez could make late move

While Liverpool supporters have a right to be disappointed with the business done during Arne Slot’s first transfer window in charge, they have at least managed to keep the band together.

Aside from the out of contract exits of Thiago Alcantara, Joel Matip and Adrian, Liverpool have not lost any of their squad from last season.

Fabio Carvalho and Sepp van den Berg look like good prospects, but both were out on-loan last season.

Meanwhile, though Bobby Clark did contribute when given the chance, his 12 appearances should be easy to cover.

One player who would be much more difficult to replace is Joe Gomez. As Trent Alexander-Arnold said, Gomez was ‘exceptional’ last season.

But after seemingly dropping down the pecking order under Slot, Gomez has been heavily linked with a move away.

And although it had looked likely that Gomez will stay beyond deadline day, The Athletic report that the 27-year-old could actually still move on.

They claim that Gomez is ‘firmly out of favour’ now at Anfield and his profile of versatility is attracting a number of Premier League managers.

As a result, it’s said that a late approach for the England international is possible. That is reportedly ‘unlikely’ to come from the previously interested Newcastle, however.

Liverpool need to find Joe Gomez replacement

It’s slightly strange that we head into deadline day having been given no clear update on Gomez’s situation for a little while.

The versatile defender has been seemingly exploring his options ever since being left out of the opening Premier League matchday squad on August the 17th.

Since then there have rumours flying around, but they have come to nothing. Nevertheless, if Gomez was certain to stay, it feels likely that that line would have been fed out by Liverpool by now.

As a result, we do feel like something may be in the offing for Gomez. And whether that comes to fruition or not, Liverpool need to make sure they are sorted with a replacement ahead of time.

One way or another, it’s apparent that Gomez’s Liverpool future does not have all that much time left to run. The Reds need to get themselves prepared for that and make a signing today.
